better gas milage

my 1.8 auto wolf not so good.. the auto is driving me nuts downshifting, its so touchy up-down-up what can i do to take off or adjust???  taking off the cad converter a good thing for gas milage?? what should i do first for better gm. i new 5sp was the best but no golfs over here. i like this car but alot to twik it up… thanks for your help butch

Check fluid level. If it doesn't look a clean red colour, change the fluid. Also there's an adjustment on the throttle cable linkage, can't think what it is so you'd need to look at a Haynes manual to get the specs right…
