B****** Linkage

Ive just done the linkage..off for a test drive…
reverse
3rd
5th
no 1st or 2nd

strip it again, set the 20mm gap at the base of the stick. all looks ok. still no 1st or 2nd

should it be in any particular gear when setting the 20mm gap or neutral.

ive given up as its now dark… i'm sure its being difficult because i mentioned selling it!!

Mine needed further adjustment after setting to 20mm. trial and error i found was the best way

What I did when doing my GTI years ago after following the official guidance and ending up similar to you, was to get the gearbox in reverse. Remove the pop-off links under bonnent near gearbox and the clamp under the car. Position gear lever in reverse position, tighten up the clamp under the car and reconnect the links under bonnet. Worked OK for me.

Did mine not so long ago and found the adjustment gap for mine was nearer 16mm. Replaced all bushes and linkages but did the final adjustments from under the car with the wife  helping from inside the car moving from neutral to 1st, 2nd etc.. this was much easier as you will then see how the linkage arrangement works. Its a bit of a fiddle and frustrating, but when you ve got it right it will tranform the car and makes a real difference.
