axle stands

can any of you guys advise on the best supporting area for axle stands front and rear on my mk1?. i want to remove all front suspension and wishbones etc. many thanks

If you're removing the suspension at the rear, then there's a couple of options. One is to remove the bumper and use the bumper mounting holes to support a custom made bracket, and lift the rear of the car with an engine crane. The other is to make shaped supports (eg from wood) and place the axle stands under the sills, just in front of the fuel tank (helps if engine is still in the car for this). There is the jacking point at the rear but its in a kinda funny place and the axle stand is likely to interfere with the rear panel.

For the front, probably the best place is the jacking points, but check they are strong enough because its a common area to corrode. You can also go on the sills, once again with suitable shaped blocks to spread the load. If you weren't removing the suspension then the area under the wishbone front bolt is the strongest, though.

thanks paul, i think the front jacking point is the best option on the front as the sills have had their fair share of bad jacking!! cheers again jon
