Not surprised as that's very cheap nowadays. Heres some I was watching on ebay just before crimbo - look how much they went for ! :

As for calipers from other cars - I'm looking into something interesting but it might not work so keeping it under my hat for now    Personally I don't like the idea of using caliper spacers, but enough people use them. Some of the people on the Caddy forum have used G60 calipers on adapter brackets.

The volvo 4 pot is 1 piece. I think it fits using a Rover disc, which may be the same disc that TSR use in the 285mm conversion. They're a big heavy caliper, but reliable. If it's true that they fit, then you should be able to use calipers from the GM range as the Volvo use the same mounting position. It's common to use the Volvo calipers on Manta's. My Manta uses the 16V Astra brakes after I tried fitting Volvo ones to my Mk2 Astra. I have quite a range of GM calipers and a spare pair of Golf uprights. I'll try some if you want.

if you could i think that you would be doing me and 100's of other mk1 golf owners a massive favour. Thanks for your help!!

Yes the old square 240 Volvo calipers will fit the MK1 hub but you will have to get some sort of sleeve made up to basically make the Volvo mounting holes smaller and you will need around a 270mm disc.

Now the Volvo is a big arse caliper so not sure on wheel clearance :dontknow:

Rover do a 262mm disc I think but a little bigger would be better.

The Volvo calipers won't fit a Mk1 stub axle. The carrier mount spacing is the same, but the Volvo uses 12mm bolts where the Golf uses 10mm to hold carrier onto stub axle. The Volvo and Rover conversion was done by CCC magazine back in the early 90's, but they had to make adapter plates to get it to work.

My problem is that i am using 14'' wheels and the 256mm upgrade is the biggest i can fit!!!

i think im just gonna do the master cylinder and servo for now and keep a look out for the bits i need.
If some one could source technical drawings for the carriers i could make some, as i am studying auto engineering at uni.

What are the chances of being able to make the carriers from scratch myself??

Just a few ideas.

m6m62

what are the posibilities of getting bolts made up to do the conversion?
or even some sort of sleeve to fit the bolt?

OK - what I thought about trying was the Volvo calipers mounted using Volvo bolts that had been 'turned down' to 10mm thread (ie, 12mm going through carrier, then 10mm thread to bolt to stub axle). If you have access to a lathe (I don't !), and a die set, then you may be able to try this. Question is - what disk to use ?  The Rover one is inset quite a bit I believe (CCC had to space the caliper backwards so it would line up with the disk). I was going to look at the 320BMW disks as a possible, but might be too small. G60 disks are another, but they may be too big.
The other thing I was thinking of was Astra 16V / Calibra calipers as they use a 256mm disk, so theoretically would suit the 256mm Golf 16V disk. I'd heard of people using Volvo calipers on Vauxhalls, so I thought the same 'turned down bolt' method may work (?)
All of the above completely untested and none of it may work !!!  A lot depends on how the caliper sits on the stub axle, and how inset or otherwise the chosen disk fits.
Just ideas - might be talking a load of sh*te !!!

Thats exactly what i was thinking of!!! its a good idea although it may take a few attempts to get the bolt to sit right through both the caliper and stub axle!!

my mate is in to vaux halls so i might ask him if he can lend me some of his older bit to play with and see if the astra 16v part could be fit.

lets see.
