anybody a specialist on mk1 golf 1600 gearbox.

i have nearly finished my 16v conversion into my mk1, but after we got it runing we ran into a problem, the car sounds fine until it gets warm then there is i very load squealing coming from the flywheel area, when you turn the engine of the noise continues after the flywheel has stoped only momenteraly thow, as if somthing else is slowing down from a spin.

we have had it of today and put it back on and it still makes the noise.  slightly unsure what side of the friction plate the shim goes on and its all we can think of at the min,
anyinput would be much great as we are at a bit of a loose end

Did you bend / distort the thin metal backing gasket / plate thing (that goes in between the box and the block)? I did when I had my box off and it made a nasty knocking sound when alll back together. After a bit of use it obviously wore the metal away slightly and the noise went away...

it not a nocking noise, its more like a screaming noise, and starts quiet and gets louder until it peaks after about 30 seconds, we have just measurd the old presure plate and against the new one it is thiner by a far bit.
