Alloy wheel size advice please

Hi all, what size alloy wheels will fit on a mk1 cabby 1.6gl ? is there a rule of thumb i need to follow?
or do i just need to look at 14"'s or 15"'s etc.
If anyone could send a little advice to make sense of my confusion in this area i would appreciate it.

many thanks in advance folks

You wouldnt really want to go bigger than 15" otherwise you'll have clearance issues

A 14" or a 15" rim both with ET38 are perfect for standard set ups, running 185/60/14 and 195/50/15 tyres respectivly will also see no change in your speedo set up on the dash

Otherwise the world is your oyster, be careful if going for a lower numbered ET as the wheels may then rub on your arches especially if lowered..

I found a really useful site last week. you enter your current tyre size and the  size you would like to fit and it tells you how far off your speedo will be.

http://www.kouki.co.uk…sual-tyre-size-calculator

I put my mk 4 details in (175/80/14) and it came back with the best matches being: 215/50/15, 215/55/16, 220/45/17, 220/40/18, 225/35/19

(well, it kept me busy for a while! )

*EDIT*

It does say that not all of the sizes it offers are actually available sizes eg: 125/85/19

unless you go on the kwikfit website! they seem to think that a standard mk1 tyre is 175/80/13

Hi, I'm interested in the above post as I have just purchased a set of wheels, 7x15's with ET38…..I have been told they will not fit a 1990 Cabby with no mods as they will be too wide ie sticking out past the acrhes.  Can someone please sonfirm as it could be an expensive mistake if they don't fit!!

I don't think 7"s fit properly although a number of people have fitted their cars with them - with various problems along the way too. I can't think of any technical advantage to running 7" wheels on a car as small/light as a Mk1 Golf anyway.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not really bothered about performance/handling or I wouldn't have bought a Clipper! :-)  I just bought the wheels as they are quite rare and if they dont fit correctly I'll move them on, am thinking the problem I might have with the ET38 and 7" is them not poking out the arches.  If anyone has a similar size wheel fitted or similar experience it would be appreciated

Just replied to your other post but now I know they are et38 I can be a bit more helpful!

Depending on if you are low or not they might rub the arches on the front but if you run a stretched tyre say 165/50/15 the rubbing will be a lot less if any.

But not everyones agrees with tyre stretch.

Also if you have coilovers then you would probably have to take the helper springs off the front as they might rub.

Rears I would say would be fine with a 195/50 but wouldnt looked right with stretched on the front imo

They definately wont stick out the arches though!
