Advise on parts please?

Hi all.

Ive had my 1985 1.6 Auto Cabriolet for a few weeks now and the suspension and brakes seem pretty poor.

I have been shopping around for new parts but have no idea exactly what I should be buying.
What I mean is - do I buy Mk1 or Mk2 parts.
Most of the motor factors search engines want to sell me Mk2 parts because its a 1985 car.

I am told that because its a Cabriolet its a Mk1. If this is the case, would it be easier to tell them my car is a 1983 Cabriolet and if I did, are those parts the same as on my car??

Ive actually baught 4 new shock absorbers, new rear springs and new front top mounts from Unipart, but I have a feeling the shocks are not the same.
Any advise will be very much appreciated.
 :banghead:

Cheers.

Trev.

Well it appears nobody else knows the answer either.
If you guys don't know then I doubt I'll ever find out.
Ive even asked VW but I think the car was older than the guy I spoke to so had no joy there.

It seems these Golf's are more aggro than they're worth.
I'm now considering swapping it for a classic Mini.

Buy parts specific to the model and year for the car. Don't get drawn into it being a Mk1, there's plenty of changes which gradually occurred over the years which means a late cabby has different parts to an early hatchback. Yours being 1985 means there's not too many changes from the hatchbacks but there are some, I'm not going to list all the changes year by year though!!!

Basically, just tell the parts place your make/model/trim/year of car and let them worry about supplying the right one. If its wrong then its their responsibility to swap it with the correct part etc. Telling them its 1983 when its 1985 is daft really.
