4 to 5 speed conversion on a 1.1

Hi all,

I'd like to swap the 4 speed box in my 79 mk1 for a 5 speed. Can anyone tell me what box I need?
I've been offered a 5 speed from a cabrio with a dx engine, is this suitable?

Won't work You need a 5 speed from a mk3 Polo (91-94)

& the gearbox mount needs fabricating too

I was considering doing this on my 1.3,and still may in the summer. 
Sounds like the 8p polo box is a good choice, just needs a little modification/ fabrication on the mount. 

Is there nothing that's bolt in? I wouldn't have the facilities to make a gearbox mount.

no don't think so sadly would like to do the same, i'd probably go for the mk3 polo gearbox

Is it worth the hassle? with brick like aerodynamics and the little engine i suspect it will struggle to pull higher gearing if thats your ambition.

Did anyone go any further with this? ive found a mk2f polo which im hoping to get the box off this week but cannot find much on what to do with a the mount, all i know is that it is possible to cut the golf and polo mounts and weld them together

yes thats what you do, fit it all up to the car then you'll soon see what needs to be done

I would kill for a 5th gear in my 1.3

Its the one thing that constantly does my head in.
