1982 GL CAB 4 or 5 gears????

Hi Guys, I am new on here and just wondered if someone could answer a question for me, I have a 1982 GL CAB which I am restoring, It went straight through the MOT today no problems or advisorys at all!!! amaZing seeing as it been sitting in a barn for 10 years!! and is 28 years old! please can some one tell me should this car have 5 gears as it only has 4? It won't move over at all to select where I think 5 should be? Thanks Andy

What CC is it?

My GTI is based on the GLi version, that has 5 speed (as a GTI should).

In the brochure for that year under the GL column it has 4/5 speed but is blank for the GLi. It could have been an option to have 5 speed.

Hi thank you, it is 1457 CC? I have a 1980 GLI as well that i have been working on but the GL is so clean I think I will just carry on with it and leave the other one, the engine and gearbox I will change soon I think especiallt seeing as it has only 4 gears
