1.8 GTI cabby stuck in 1st

Hello I have a 1.8 GTI Cabby which started slipping in 3rd then 5th when I was out and about not pushing it very hard. when I got home I decided to leave it on the drive until I could get round to have a look at the linkage etc… it was also making a whurrring noise like a space ship might in 4th and 5th. not enough oil perhaps? I came round to take it off the drive today to clean when it selected reverse but didn't move i tried this a couple of times and nothing. then I tried to put it in first and now it's stuck in front of the garage  :redfaced: anyone any ideas? do I need a new gearbox? I'm not sure if the gear linkage is setup right either as it is very clunky and loose fitting. could this be the problem? any help muchly appreciated. p.s sorry for the mammoth post. Thanks

Pull the hand brake up and keep your foot over the brake pedal and turn the ignition key. It might free it off. Or, disconnect the linkage and try and select neutral by hand on the gearbox? If it doesn't come free you need a gearbox :-(

Usually, it will be your linkage with the mk1's. They're all terrible if not maintained.

ok I've got it freed and ordered a gear linkage and topped up with gearbox oil, but now when I start it i have to have my foot on the clutch and when i let go of the clutch i have to put my foot on the accelerator or it will stall.  : s. any ideas??
