1.1 to 5 speeder!

Hey,

I have a 1983 1.1 golf c and it has a standard engine and box. I have just discovered golfmk1.co.uk and they recomended this club to offer advice.  The main problem is that I would benefit form a 5 speed box for when I want to occasionally go on the motorway! As I?m sure you are aware the standard 4 speeder is not the best option. I am 17 and I am governed by insurance costs, so what options are available? And can anyone offer me any advice on what conversions are needed etc? I have some mechanical background so i will do the work myself. I could stretch to a 1.3 or maybe even a 1.5 but what you recommend?

i think the 1.3 polo came with a 54speed box. i know the engine fits straight in but i think you need to change some brackets and modify the down pipe to get a 5 speed box to work.

Have a look in the 'Small Block Carb Engines' section.

a lot of hard work for not much outcome IMO.

4 speed is FINE. trust me. my 1300 can do 110, sounds fine at 80.
