1.1 on rear discs

I'v had too many close calls with my standard brakes, one of which was completly locking up and sliding straight past the car in front much to the other drivers supprise!  8O  At the moment the engine is standard, however i have big plans for the small block! Before i start adding bhp i want to be able to stop a little better.

First off i was going to fit some calipers off of the GTI, and drilled / slotted discs on the front. Which is all relitivly straight forwards. But i want to do somthing about the back, Namely Discs. I know that the conversion is possible for the GTI (using mk2 componants), but is it much different for the 1.1?

Any hints, tips or suggestions welcome.

Exactly the same.

errm if you can lock up the brakes now, you might want to look at getting some better and/or wider tyres, as bigger/better brakes will only help you lock up quicker?

also I don't think a mk1 ever really needs discs on the back, execpt for cosmetic reasons or for serious track weapons, plus the drums make much better handbrakes…

i wouldnt bother with the discs on the rears, as its to much hassel then its worth, you have t fit a rear compensating valve that runsof your rear axle, other wise you rears will be locking up due to full brake pressure going to the calipers permenetly, i have heard about people using bigger drum set ups on the rear, this may be an option, but as mentioned by mk1vdub, get bigger better tyres as these make a hell of a diffrence.

i always have the last laugh ;)

Discs

Bugger, i missed the kit on ebay!!  :banghead:

I'm still going to do it in the future tho! i'm going to go to a scrappy to find the bits as soon as i have a free weekend. i'm going to be looking out for a 16v servo aswell! Hopefully by then i will hav found some GTI calipers aswell……

The brake kit went for ?55 bugger!

Cheers

btw, the reason for sorting out my brakes (besides locking up) is i'm going to be 'polishing' the inside of my engine and fitting bike carbies!

i wouldent bother with rear disks either, dude, it could be down to your driving if your sliding that far, try driving slower, and braking erlier lol
