"BIG" problem please please help !!

i  have a golf GTI cabrio,

when i drive over sharp bumps, pot holes, or bridge joints it makes a big noise ! its so frustrating as i dont know what is wrong with it .

coming from front passenger side suspension/ suspension area.

the noise dosent really happen when going over smooth bumps.

i have gone out n put new tyres on and checked air pressure - all ok

i have even driven other cars to see what it feels like going over the same bumps on those particular roads…..u ont feel absolutly nothing.

especially bridge joints on motorways makes such a loud bang noise…..where on other cars i driven..absolutly nothing.

i dont know if its the shock absoorber…im one the push test ..it goes up n down…..the car is not bouncy at all…even when driving…it seems the opposite…..that its dead with no sping

what could it possibly be ?

I've had what sounds like similar symptoms to you guys.  Was broken coils springs.  Check you ride height (ground to wheel arch) is equal all the way round.  Could also be knackered bumpstops/topmounts.

the distance between the tyre and arch look big..im not sure if that is normal…most definantly noticible difference between the front 2 then the back 2

car is not lowered.

had it checked from underneath ..mechanic ( back street ) said nothing he can see outa place or worn….

i first thought it might be anti role bar bushes ?

do the top mounts, there only a tenner a side, and guarentee that your old ones will be buggerd anyway, also check the shockers? are they leaking?

i always have the last laugh ;)

shocks. you say the suspension feels stiff? and the front sits too high maybe? top mounts are always worth looking at with anything like that. common problem on mk1s

the shocks/top mounts may be the culprit, they might not be leaking but they could be worn out, 2 front bilstein inserts a set of febi top mounts and 2 new springs wont cost ?100 also worth doing the ball joints and anti roll bar bushes and front suspension arm bushes
even if its a younger cab most of those parts will be at least 15 years old!!
