.So after buying a red one last year which turned out not be a good one….. I found another Syncro!
Quite tidy and came with a stack of history including the original invoice and a one lady owner for 23 years.
Taking it to GTI festival on Sunday at the Pod for its first proper run out. Bring on the snow!!

Nice rare find, there is one on Autotrader At moment for £850 but looks quite tatty but may have potential, but nowhere near as nice as the one you have found.
Is this one going to be a keeper then?

Its OK but has had paint down the sides which could have been done better.
The trim is pretty mint. I had to change the rear diff in it and the switch on the gearbox which operates it was duff.
I've been using it for a couple of weeks and the exhaust manifold gasket started to leak. it was easier to whip the head off than try and get the inlet manifold off. So I've refurbished the head as well.
That one at 850 doesn't look too bad. I know what to look for now i've had 2! i'm a golf mk2 syncro expert!

Nice one, you've got a lot of car there for that money!
I've been looking for one in Austria for the last couple of years but it's real hard to find a nice one at a sensible price.
The problem is here that they really do get used for the snow over winter and most have had a hard time by now.
My plan is to use one when mine goes off the road in winter, so I still keep looking!

I bought one a year ago without really looking into it. Stupidly I assumed because it had 12 months MOT it wouldn't be rotten. The rot hides behind the thick underseal.
It also taught me what great fun they are in the winter although its easy to get caught out under braking by a false sense of grip.
Normally (more so in winter) you get a feeling of how much grip there is when you pull away in a front wheel drive car by a wheel spin or a flashing light on the dash. You don't get that with this because there's so much grip when you pull away. Its not until you have to stop the thing suddenly, you realise that the road is a sheet of ice or grease. There's no ABS on the UK cars to get you out the mire neither!
This one is 10 times better. When i got it, I contacted the original lady owner and she found a couple of early photos of it, the original logbook and bill of sale that never went with the car's service file.

Have you tried Winter tyres on them? Made a huge difference last year on our FWD car, passed RangeRovers and TT Quattros sliding about everywhere on summer tyres.

Yeah that's what a lot of people forget, the braking side of driving, with or without ABS when diving four wheel drive cars.
That's way back in the 80's when the Audi Quattro Turbo was released there were so many of them wrapped round the nearest Elephant or whatever they could find!
Simply because although it took off like a rocket, cornered like you were on railway tracks no matter what surface you were on.
You still needed to stop it!
Owners thought the technology was a guaranteed "Free get of jail card" and nothing could go wrong but boy did they have a shock coming to them!
That's why Audi became so concerned that they decided to train about a dozen of so car salesmen throughout the UK to a very high level in order that they could teach to buyers (hopefully) there were limits to the car and not to go beyond them.
Watching the world rally championship is one thing, driving like it is another.
I know because I was one of the people picked to be trained by world class drivers.
Put that car in the hands of a Pro and it is frightening to say the least now and then.
I'd own one in a heartbeat but will never have the money so I'm still on the lookout for a half decent Golf Syncro!
I envy you mate!

I've swapped winters from the one I had last year. They do make a difference for sure.
A couple of the stock interior unique to the Syncro. - Very bland! Needs a bit of TLC here and there but for 140,000 its doing OK.

Went for the Scandinavian look today………
Some nice period Bosch Driving lamps……
Which got me thinking about a little winter adventure for it…….
I spent 10 years working for a Swedish Company and travelled round the place on several occasions. I always said I'd like to go and watch the Swedish Rally but never have.
We used to follow Rally GB when Mcrae and Burns were at the top of their games and it was a truly awesome sight, sound ,smell and atmosphere.
I reckon I'm up for a trip out in it to Karlstad February next year. I've sounded my lad out and he's up for it so watch this space!!

That is a very grey interior! Carpet, seats and door cards all grey… At least the dash is not grey.
Aways have a soft spot for a mk2 and wish I kept the mk2 gti I had as they are more refined than the mk1.

Took it for a run to GTI Festival at the weekend. Most people just pass it by because it looks like a GL from the outside and CL on the inside. The tiny amount who do know about MK2 Syncros got all excited!
It never missed a beat and drives really well. The poverty spec front seats aren't the best!
Looks like the trip to Sweden is on with my lad. I've looked into travel costs and times, and have booked a b&b about 20km from Karlstad.
Overnight ferry from Harwich to the hook of Holland. Then a nine hour drive up to Copenhagen for an overnight stop and then the following day a 7hr drive up to Karlstad.
Average lowest temp is about -8c in Karlstad at that time of year .
Need to see Colins Crest at Vargasen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF7RvCjhD7s
Best get the car prepped properly.

Hey mate you should take a road trip to Wörthersee 2016 in your Mk2 Syncro.
To see if you can get a photo of yours beside this Mk2 GTI.
Nothing special about it well apart from the fact it weighs 2.5 tonnes of pure granite!
Or just maybe it's the time for the Club to rekindle the idea of a road trip!
