Low and slow!

Hi folks,

We had this for years before we got our current brace of Golfs, and she's still in the family - and very much part of the fleet, as my mother's daily transport. As this seems to take up about as much of my time as the Mk1 does, thought I'd post a project diary of how she came to be here. It's probably worth noting that I took this project log from another site, so the timescales may seem a little odd. These first pics were from four years ago…

Anyway, here she is on the test drive, in all her shocking mobile phone pic glory:

So, a brief rundown (subject to update):

2001 "X" Audi A2 TDI SE
74k miles
1.4 TDI 75PS
Jaipur Red
Climate Control
Electric Mirrors
Illuminated Vanity Mirrors
15" alloy wheels
Concert I stereo

Work started in earnest today, beginning of course with the obligatory clean at the in-laws. Just a standard clean really; she'd been fully valeted before we picked her up from the dealer we got her from, but I wanted to get some wax on her before the Cornish winter took her toll.

Before pics, fresh from the dealer (well, plus about 100 miles anyway):

… she was clean enough as you can see, but like I said I wanted some wax on her for protection. In this case, AutoGlym Extra Gloss Protection was applied after a wash in conjunction with my beautiful assistant:

Whilst the wax was curing, I turned my attention to the failed cigarette lighter - having not ordered the correct fascia adaptor to fit my Alpine head unit, I tried to use the other half's iTrip to play something other than Radio 4 through the stereo: only to find the 12v socket was broken. Having visited the local Trago to obtain a cheap (less than £2) replacement socket, I removed the trim to find the following…

…rather large pile of ash. On closer inspection, it seems like the 12v socket, the lighter "plug-in" and generally everything around the area was chock-full of cigarette/cigar ash. A quick scrub with a wire brush and a visit with the vacuum, and all was OK:

So, after putting everything back and wiping off the wax, we were left with this as a project base:

More to follow soon :)

So, since the last post there's been major changes… but all I'm doing is leaving a hint for now…
