What is standard trim for a 1986 cabriolet

Post

Hi Folks,

More advice needed I'm afraid lol, can anyone tell what the standard bodywork trim was for my car, mines has some kind of kit (clipper I belive) and big bumpers, the more I look at them the more I think it would look better with the small black bumpers and wheel arches with no side skirts but if what's on it is standard I will leave alone, many thanks in advance for any advice offered.

Cheers.

Have you looked in the gallery section? There are brochures in there that are year specific. From memory, I think 1986 is there.

Your car would have had small bumpers and normal plastic wheel arches. As for colour they would have been black unless car was one of limited editions with all white arches and bumpers.  I can't remember seeing a standard GTI in white though back in 85/86, although there were always a few personal imports around.

There was the CC 'Christmas cabriolet' in 86 I think which was white with blue interior and roof .

and the 86 - All White

In fact I think 86 GTIs are quite thin on ground, I can remember A and B reg GTI Being common, then in 87 came the Quartet Edition GTI one of the options was a white one with white small bumpers and arches then a choice of interiors and roofs.

Thanks that's brilliant info and has confirmed what I was thinking, next question do you think it's worth taking the kit off and replacing with standard trim I've priced back and front small bumpers and wheel arch trim on vw heritage and it comes to just under £200 which doesn't seem too bad, but it doesn't stop me feeling I've payed way over the top for a car that needs a fair bit of work to get it tip top for info I payed 3400 for it l…..silly boy.

Interesting info there Richard.

Factor in what will be found under the Clipper kit too. Chances are it won't be pretty and you may need some bodywork doing.
Always nice to have a standard car though!!!
Do some more checking just to make sure you are 100% right before changing anything.

Yep small bumper model.

The "face lift model" as it was termed was introduced 88. VW didn't want to spend any money on developing a MK2 Cabby.
People call it the "Clipper Kit" but clipper is the name of the base model of the cabriolets range.
If you have the build sticker still on the rear cross member in the boot you can use the decoder to see what trim, paint etc it would of had.

The CC Cabriolet had 2 white versions, "lady charme" and "Lady Sunshine" both white slightly different trim.

Lady Charme was introduced at the start of January 1986. After the Christmas Cabrio was launched December 85 in time for Santa…
Looking at your car the first Reg date was Jan 86.
There's a possibility it could we'll be a Lady Charme version.
This was part of the VW Festival Range to coincide with various seasonal festivities.
Rich has put the brochure in the thread gives you an idea of what may of been on your car at new.
Time to do detective work lol.

Is that the right registration for the car? C reg was 1985 to 86 so check both brochures.

Registered 14th January 1986, so spot on for the CC Edition, Launched at Christmas, although the all white one must have been around as well as the brochure date is Nov 85, although seen some of these on D plate as well which was Aug 86 onwards.

Hi,
I have a white C reg GTI cabby. The boot label confirms it was Alpine White from the factory. I decoded the label to get a build date of late Nov 85 (also confirmed by date stamps on various plastic components), but it wasn't registered until June 86. A previous owner has put on the facelift kit, and later style grille (and power hood). It isn't a special edition as it has the grey houndstooth interior, and a black hood. I have debated returning it to original bumpers and arches, but can't decide if I should, and if I do, whether to go for black or white bumpers.

I think I'm defiantly going to remove the kit as I don't personally think it does anything for the car they look far better with the black bumpers and wheel arches along with the black coachline , thanks for all the help and advise guys

As far as I know you can't obtain the correct bumpers anymore assuming the originals were black/chrome or white if a GTi model

Hi I have a 87 Quartet in Sapphire Metalic took me a while to find the correct Bumpers on the web but it was worth the hunt.

I agree with you that the lines without the later body kit complement the car well but it is everyone to their own taste.

After 4 years of ownership I am still finding bits on the web to replace old worn out parts and its fun. But not as much fun as when you get behind the wheel on your favourite twisty bit of road.

From Wolfsburg when we went in 2012.
They can help you imagine how it would look. Perhaps.
