VW Golf Convertible Clippier 1987 Gold/brown

Post

So the story started of this april with me swapping my mk5 golf 1.9TDI, for a 1987 1.8 Golf clipper with 57,530 miles on the clock and no rust on the car at all. The car has been in storage for 5 years before the last owner
The car looked like this at the start:

Before me owing the car, the previous owner put Weber DTML 32/34 carbs on it, K&N air filter a GTI camshafts and it has been lowered on JOM coilovers, new roof, new carpet, Debadged grill and cross hair headlights

The heater matrix was not working so it was replaced

Test fitted my son's wheels, and thought the mk1 needs some BBS

The roof needed a good clean too

The Difference between the dirty and clean is massive

And then came my BBS RS (Reps)

Then Gear Lever Repair Kit came and needed fitting

And the car needed some painting and sealant underneath

Before:

After:

Car is not show ready yet, but took it to Westside Treffen

The reps are now sold and now the car is rolling on 14" Lupo alloys until it will receive real BBS RM's in early January

Project carrying on so watch this space:thumbs:

Looking good.

Why are there 2 speaker magnets stuck to the floor? Or is it the fuel tank; to hold metal debris at the bottom of the tank?

You are partly right. The clipper body kit came out in 1988 however the clipper came out in 1984 I believe without the bodykit. If you type my number plates into my car check it comes out as clipper

The reps are now sold, sitting on my son's friend's lupo.

I am looking for real BBS RM's for the golf, probably will be on the car at the start of January, the plan for the BBS are 6.5J at the front and 8.5/9J at the back, but for now the car is sitting on Lupo 14" alloys until the BBS come

I've got a brochure for the 88 model year and the pictures all have bodykits on, but there is a flyer in the brochure to say that there was a delay with the kits so not all would arrive with them.  I do prefer the looks with the small bumpers.

Hi there, Your car is awesome! I've just bought my first car yesterday (Golf Mk1 Cabby) in White and The roof needs a good clean but I'm not too sure what to use to clean it up nice and new and not ruin it also. I quickly tried a steam cleaner this morning but it didnt even touch it.

You look like you've done a really good job with your roof, what did you use along with the scrubbing brush? and products?

This is my roof! https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1511987709088845&id=1511410075813275

Yeah the small bumpers look so much nicer. I am looking for the small euro chrome bumpers for it

Funny enough I used a lot of products made for the roof and none of them helped. Then one time my son came out with one of these sneaker cleaners (link below) and it did a really good job. Really would recommend it for the roof mate. Does the magic

My Cabrio is an E-reg and the original sales paperwork that I still have quotes it as a "Clipper" (and V5?) but its small bumpered. I'd love to see a copy of the flyer from Richard that explains the reason why. My car doesn't have the 'Clipper' rear decals either. It does have colour coded mirrors and the original owner said the dealer painted them and held up delivery for couple of days to do this???

It gets more confusing as later the carburettor models were sold as "Clippers" but even the GTIs wore Clipper kits…..

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Early-1800   I'll try and ig out for you and scan it, the brochure I have was a 1988 model year brochure for all VW's and interestingly, only mentions the GTI  version, but the typed flyer has all the Clipper Spec on - wonder if they were changing their minds about which versions to import?  Also got an 87 Soecial editions brochure I think which has got Clipper, Scirocco Scala , mk2 Golf Driver and Passat Topic in .

PM. Me your e.mail as it should be easier to send a full size attachment.

Nice car that ! Looks good !

So do you have the magnets on the bottom of the fuel tank, because you have rust and debris in the tank, that is getting sucked through the lines to the carb !

Looks a sweet ride by the way !

Clipper update; (sorry not intending to hijack thread).

I have found a Sept '87 "Volkswagen Audi Car" magazine that reviews the new Clipper. The car featured is a Bronze D-reg 1.8 carb and has small bumpers. I does have the "Clipper" rear side decals. The text intimates that going forward the small bumpered Clipper will be the entry level version and the GTI spec version will be fitted with the colour coded bumpers and mirrors (now known as the Clipper kit?)

The 87/88 model year brochures also seem unsure what cabrios will be available and in what spec, inc Clipper kits or not and as Richard has highlighted whatever plans they had run into problems with last minute typed updates to spec and price lists. The April '87 Special Editions brochure I have shows a red 1.8 carb small bumpered Cabrio marketed as a Clipper. Its not clear if this was a one off special edition like the C-reg Christmas Cabrios or was intended to become the new mainstream entry model?

So it looks like late D-reg and early E-reg 1.8 carb Cabrios will be Clippers even though they don't wear what has become to be known as the Clipper body kit and may not have Clipper decals (was this a dealer fitment?). In late 1987 it looks like VW got their act together and fitted the body kit to all Cabrios but only the carb engine cars are sold and badged as Clippers.

That's a great looking cabby, I've always loved them in this colour ;)

The roof cleaned up nice - as has the whole car, it looks well

Have you replaced the scuttle cover yet? If not you could be getting wet feet! ;)

So how did it feel switching from a MK5 to a MK1?

Yeah I got one a week after I have bought the car so it's all good now.  Switching from mk5 to mk1? definitely different, and less comfortable. No AC, audio is not as good and it is so much different to drive no power assisted steering or brakes, however it was worth it, because whenever I drive it I have people beeping and waving at me or putting thumbs up. At traffic lights people stop and talk to me about the car and how nice it is. I love that feeling, the car and the fact that I have my dream. I like the fact that other people like it and that it turns heads where as the mk5 was just an everyday car that no one cared about, it is definitely something different
