1978 GL
I bought this car recently but here's a bit of history from it's previous owner.
The shell was going to be thrown out so Michael rescued it and started getting it ready for the road.

There wasn't much rust to cut out.
Then it was time to make sure no more rust could take hold.
The engine bay was resprayed in something that's almost scratchproof.
Interior got some sound deadening and new carpet

Recaros were fitted that weren't too expensive and the dash was reskinned.
Suspension was fully polybushed including the steering rack.
Some nice shocks were fitted.
KR went in with twin 40's
And Michael went racing.
Unfortunately he went from full revs in 3rd to 4th but selected 2nd.

This is where I come in.
Picked up the car and a sideboard off Michael's neighbour. It helped me get much needed brownie points with my wife.
That Tarago has done over 460,000 ks and still has it's original engine.

Here's my MK2 GTI. It's my daily, takes me to work 60 miles away every day. She did 25,000 miles last year without skipping a beat so I don't bother carrying a toolbox. Touch wood. .
Lots of little mods to make it reliable and fun to drive - 2.0 8v, coilovers, bigger brakes, good radio and aerial (I still have to change channels 3 times going to work and coming home).

I've updated the previous posts, still having problems adding pictures but at least some times it works.
I still can't put in the picture of the engine bay with the KR.

When I click Preview it makes it worse. All the pictures take their time uploading then it takes me to the warning page and tells me this site doesn't host pictures and to upload to Photobucket. When I go back to my post I can't change where the pictures are loading to (was already set to upload to Photobucket) so I click to add my post and it comes up blank.
I've just updated the 1st post - it said the picture was deleted - no, I don't know why when the picture was there yesterday. It let me put a picture there just now (I clicked Preview and it saved my update instead of previewing but at least it let me make a change). I tried to fix the missing picture in the 3rd post and I got this message: "File storage directly on The Mk1 Golf Owners Club is not currently available. You must select at least one valid syndication target."
I did exactly the same steps.
This is driving me insane……..

Trying again to add the engine bay picture.
It took 4 attempts, taking a snapshot of the original picture, copy it to Microsoft Paint and renaming it but it worked. .
Don't know why it created a new blank post every time I clicked on Preview.
I'm going to have a cup of coffee and go sit on the verandah and watch the world go by.
At least I can add a picture of my verandah. Cheers

The plan is to get the 9a in and running and make this my daily. I live way out in the country so most of my drive to work is on winding country roads. It's patroled by Police a lot because it's the main road from Canberra to the coast. Because of this I need a car that sits comfortably at 60 - 70 mph but has a bit of power to overtake. If I went 20vt I know I'd drive too fast and loose my licence so a nice torquey engine like the 9a is perfect. No ABF either, power is way too high in the rev range for it to be useful to me.
Once it's running I'll tackle the paint. Inside it's perfect with new headlining and carpet but outside it's a different story.
Looks like it's been parked under a tree for a year or two too long.
If I can get it half as good as your car Matt I'll be happy.
This is what I'm aiming for, looks like a Suziki Swift GTI colour. At least no-one can say they didn't see me coming.
Cheers

These are coming soon. Still not sure if I'll fit them but it gives me more options for tyre/wheel choice.
I also have a set of 7x14 two piece wheels but I think 14's look small on MK1's, especially when you put low profile tyres on them.
If I can fit these 16x8 Contras off an 80's Mercedes I think they would suit the Golf much better.

Getting spare parts shouldn't be a problem. The local VW wrecker has 70 MK1's spread around the place.
He's even got a couple of Cabbys in case I need some parts a bit more modern than 1980.
With a bit of luck I can find a Wolfsburg steering wheel in good condition and I might get a swallowtail bonnet and rear panel to go onto my car.
Cheers
