silver campaign project

I was lucky enough to spot this locally on gumtree, its been in a garage for the last 2 years on its side on a rollover jig and was in a different garage for 13 years before that.



its been painted gold at some stage and had the rear arches, scuttle panel and the front and rear panels replaced



looks solid enough


few repairs needed on the sunroof tray and tailgate



good seat belt mount and filler neck

also came with the original engine rebuilt, honed, new rings, gaskets, belts etc.



i bought the roll over jig it was on as thought it will be handy and I found a piper cam in a box of parts that came with it


headliner seems ok to use if I can keep it intact

A good find looks like it needs a bit of work...but if you restore it it will be another mk1 saved from neglect then oblivion. keep us posted!

getting the gold paint off  



no etch primer was used so can scrape it back to bare metal where its been sanded.

the interior has been re trimmed but my other mk1 gti project has the right interior for it and have 2 spare front seats so just need a grey gti rear bench and some bolster repairs on the fronts.



I need to make some new doors for the garage before I can use the roll over jig so will get the under side done after that. most of the under seal has already been scraped off by the last owner so shouldn't be too bad and I couldn't see any welding needed when I looked at it in his garage



Also it came with 2 of each of these caps I have not seen the ones on the right before but both have the same part no, the ones with the bumps are easier to get off where the others are tight.

Looks like you have found yourself a very nice project there! - I too have a silver campaign that I am working on through the winter (in a similar state)

Do you mind me asking what you paid for this piece of automotive history?

it was £800 and £50 the rollover jig. didn't bother haggling as thought it was a good price. the guy I bought it off was more of a ford guy and he didn't use the internet much so a bit of a steal

all the gems are in cornwall mate just got to grab them when you can.  not sure which I prefer out of the 2.  silver one could be on the road quicker I think



need to change the door as cant get it on the spit with an up an over door so will make some wooden ones, no more banged heads

made some panels

almost got all the gold paint off, will be making a start on welding the roof up next so headliner has to come down

small amount of progress, made a start on patching the roof which is a little worse than I thought but getting through it slowly. I also did some repairs to the gutter on the a pillar as was a bit ropey where the scuttle was replaced. took a long time to get the metal folded and bent to the right shape.
 

also the screws for the sunroof frame were rusted in so sheared the threads from the body when I tried to unscrew them, so welded in some m4 nuts.

found a hole in the drivers door sill but thankfully I have a piece to repair it left over from my last project. also have an old tailgate to patch up the rear screen area

 more repairs taking place, slow progress but will get there eventually



I am swapping a set of wheels with a friends cabby as he needs it out the way so will update once It arrives but thinking I might break it for spares as it has no roof. I actually bought the wheels off him anyway

I also sold him the steel wheels on it so will get those back, and will have quite a few little bits that I will need on both my tintop projects, will be a shame to break it but there is no roof, front panel, interior or engine.

 I am not sure if I can take the rear arches off it to transplant on to the campaign as they do need replacing. after digging out a lot of filler you can see the repair panels have not been fitted very well.  

 got this hole filled too

not too bothered about losing the wheels though as have another set that's 15" with the proper hex caps instead of 16" with home made flat caps.

 

not achieved a huge amount but still plugging away, swapped the arches from the breaker, it was even the same colour



both sides nearly done, just little bit still to do at the rear corners and on rear panel





also cut out a section of bulkhead around the clutch cable hole, I was a little worried about it cracking when used so braced it from the rear so keeps it looking factory

thanks I wish vw had thought of it, I've had 12 mk1's now and on every one the cable pulled through the bulkhead because of cracking. the shell I used for a donor was probably one of the best I have seen but still had cracks
