1982 1.6 Gti Silver - Resto project
Hi all,
Starting a new thread to document my new project, bringing a 1982 1.6 Gti back to (hopefully) its former glory, and then some.
Ive been a member for a few years, reading build threads and slowly picking up info.
The car in question arrived, to Banstead, Surrey, by transporter yesterday (23rd July), having agreed a deal with fellow forum member Raj the day before. Car runs well, but is SORN'd and currently without MOT.
I've christened the car Sally Cinnamon (Sally as she's silver, Cinnamon as shes a bit rusty!) after my favourite Stone Roses song - for some reason I have a habit of naming cars after songs I like. The lyrics match quite well too:
Until Sally I was never happyI needed so much more……
Sent to me from heavenSally Cinnamon you're my world
Strip her down, search for rust.
All plastics and trims off, cut out any bad rust i find and treat ready for bodyshop work.
Sort suspension - currently on (a bit dodgy) coilovers. Planning to fit KWV2s. I had KWV3s on my previous project (porsche 964 - named the Midnight Joker, as she was Midnight blue and reg plate ended in JKR), and they made an incredible difference. I've read that V2s are more than capable of doing the same for the Mk1.
Exhaust - full stainless system (miltec probably)
Wheels - undecided, current on a set of BBS (not sure of the model, feel free to educate me) and ive also got a set of BBS Mahles which were included in the purchase price. I've always been a fan of the G60 steelies though - I may buy a set and get them sublty banded. Personal taste but im not into excessive camber or overly stretched tyres, so at somepoint during the build I'll no doubt be asking for advice on best widths, if I decide to go down this route.
Engine - planning to drop the engine before the car goes to the bodyshop for final prep/paint, and i'll do my best to strip it down (very much a novice in all of this). Im not fully aware of the upgrades available to give the 1.6 extra poke, by the time I get to this stage i'll have had plenty of time to make my mind up - as always during this thread please feel free to chip in with suggestions/comments/friendly criticism/advice.
Interior - full refurb, original apart from Im going to modernise the head unit. Not worried about volume, but would like CD/Iphone compatibility.
Colour - at the moment I havent decided between keeping it original silver or chnaging to something i prefer, again i have time to think on this
Anyway, some photos below and work ive started this weekend:

Keep it silver!
Original is best with subtle, modern improvements to make it yours / personal.
My opinion obviously
Good luck Sir, sounds and looks a great project.

I'm hoping that mine won't need replaced, only surface rust found so far. Will likely need new sills, and possibly wheel well/floor panels though

NB, further to above: obviously there is a hold shown above in bottom corner panel, which is more that surface rust!! Would rather have that filled than replace panel to maintain originality
