My 83 driver rwd project

Post

The plans simple :) take the shell fit engine in the boot done ;)

Eyup guys and girls

Thought I would share my mk1 project from day 1 to what I hope will be the end product

Been after a mk1 for years but all the good ones hold there value well and the closest I ever got was a couple of mk3's vr6 2.0 8v
and on 1 occasion a audi 80 coupe 2.3 5 cylinder lol

But in 2012 after landing a dream job I had been pursuing for years hidden away in storage was a mk1 golf pretty much completely stripped out, I asked but it wasn't for sale :(

Then last November after nothing happening with the mk1 I asked again only to be told a week later the owner had no intention to do anything with it :) and I could have it if I bought him a few drinks :D

Here's how it stood off the road since 1997

That's a cheap buy! It looks pretty solid too. Much work needed on the shell?

First bit of daylight in years :)

After a quick rinse off

Worst part upto now drivers sill

There's the odd penny sized patch of rust coming through the paint but I plan to restore the body with as much metal as possible

But for a 30 year old car it's in pretty good shape

It sure will bud  :D

Material turned up today for the rotating spit so should have that built this weekend and hopefully mounted

Then it's zip wheel and repair time  O_o

Hi

Nice looking project, shell doesn't seem too bad, seen far worse on here

I have no idea how you'll complete your project, far too complicated for my tiny brain, but best of luck with it

The biggest challenge I have is the bodywork and electrics the rest should be a doddle ;)

Got my rotating spit jig made today

Was quoted £250 for a flimsy angle frame

As it stands it's cost me £47 and 3 hours of my time

Will be putting golf on the jig in the morning and hopefully making a start on chopped out any rot

£47 is a bargain mate

Good job with the jig, will make you're life infinitely better

If you can I'd drop the mounting bar down about 200mm below the rotation point. My jig is like yours, but the centre of gravity isn't it the right place, and although I can spin the shell on my own, I've had a few pant destroying moments!!

Looking at the professional ones online the mount is below the pivot point.

Oh dear :0

I just had a quick look on eBay saw how much they was and built one

I have enough box section to modify it in morning

Cheers for the heads up Matt much appreciated

What you've built will work, it's just with a slightly lower bracket you will probably be to rotate it easily, takes a fair bit of effort as it is, especially after you've been welding and grinding for a few hours and you're knackered

Yeah Matt is correct, if you don't lower the bracket the car will be out of balance. If you look at the link below(bottom of page) you can see how I made mine for my project.  I lowered the bottom bar by 200mm and it's spot on! hope this helps :thumbs:http://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&type=misc&id=your-mk1-golfs_2%2F-83-gti-set-to-get-full&start=20 A
