My 1983 1.3 5 door

Hi all.  I got this blind off eBay in July.  It hadn't run for about 10 years, but I managed to recommission it in a week and get it mot'd….

On its way home

Absolutely minging, so first job was give it a good clean.

I spent the next day giving it a bloody good clean, and start working out what it needed for the mot.  All four brakes were shot, it had a tiny hole in one of the rear inner arches, a dodgy fitted exhaust, both rear wheel bearings and a few other bits.  I decided to upgrade the brakes for g60s.  I fitted full new internals to the rear, and put some dot 5.1 in.

Little hole. Filled with weld and resealed.  It'll do for now.

New front brakes.  They came red, wouldn't have been my choice of colour!!!

A stressful 30 mins, but I got the all important ticket.

To celebrate, I fitted the coilovers.  Painted them black and fitted them with new top mounts.

A before and after…..

Much better.  Handled so much more precisely too.

I always planned on giving the body a refresh, so gave it a once over.  Other than a few dings, it wasn't too bad.  A new outer rear arch, fuel cap surround and a rear corner want swapping, and a door and the rear panel want some attention.  Could have been much worse.

I then swapped the g60 wheels for some bbs rm's.  This is the only pic I took……

…..before disaster struck.  It caught fire.  Luckily it happened outside a Halfords, so managed to grab an extinguisher.  No serious damage, but it was enough to put it out of action…..

Time to start the rebuild…..

I bought a BAM for it, and got on with rebuilding it, and dressing it up…..

Polished, gold plated and coated parts.

Gear box (CTN from a mk3 golf diesel) stripped and ready for paint.

Grey paint - looks rubbish but ready for the special trick…….heat gun time…..

Wrinkle finish!!!!

Same for the block.

I'll not bore you with too many build pics….

Few more bits to do but not loads.

Nice more door and you were lucky where it caught fire!

What caused the fire?

The brass barb that the fuel line goes onto came out the fuel pump and sprayed the manifold

So a parcel from heritage arrived today……

Hopefully start the painful task of fitting these once I've finished my engine bay.
