hi all . been meaning to do this for years, so here it is . i brought this 78 mk1 gls nearly 10 years ago now as a basket case and a project to cut my teeth on metal work wise . it needed all the usual rear arches, outer sills ,a-post repairs, rear beam carrier mounts and lots more i seem to have forgotten . the car had been treated to zebart waxing from new which probably saved it from totally rotting out .
my dream at the time was to abf power , slam it to the ground and paint it off white with a set of banded steals . in reality it took me 3 years to repair the rusty shell to an mot standard . another 3 years to collect all the parts , fit the engine, brakes and rewire . what can i say I'm a slow worker , but i did it once and had no problems .
so it was on the road for a couple of years and a great deal of fun i had . i loved the country road corners and the sunday afternoon tinkering . managed to burn out a couple of old ecu's on the way to .
unfortunately life , houses and camper vaning got in the way .so its been sat up for a wile , allowing me to tweek my dream mk1 plan . looking forward to 2018 i hope to see it back on the road for the summer as all it needs is an mot . its no show winner but it keeps the mk1 flame alive for me .
ric .

hi all , now the winter is out the way and the van has an mot. i can free up a little time to think about getting the mk 1 rolling again .
He's been off the road for nearly 3 years so i will start with the brakes . service / rebuild all four callipers as there as sticky as sticky toffee pudding . big red rebuild kits not to expensive . going to mod the system a little with some obp bias valve for the rear . never really had the brakes working as i wanted but i am looking to get this sorted this time round .
so obviously i have a little shopping list to get through and one of them being the lower bonnet latch (171823509). my one missbehaves when i hit a bump on the road and the bonnet pops open . can not see any thing wrong with mine and the spring seems good so just presume its worn out and needs replacing . i would like to put a new on on but can only find second hand or kits for top latch ,bottom latch and cable .
orded a new front and rear bumper from vw heritage . £50 each so I'm not expecting amazing quality . but i think it will tidy it up a little as early bumpers on there are looking past there best .
