Winter project - Mk1 Driver

Hi Folks,

Been looking for something to keep me busy over the winter period, and unearthed this. (Thanks  Neil)

Its a 3 owner (first for 25years) 3 door golf driver in regatta blue met. with 85,000mls on the clock and full sevice history, original number plates and all glass which was etched by Vw franchise at time of sale.

Its basically solid, but needs a lower rear valance repair panel and so far, I've found one rear rotten arch under the plastic arches. It also needs a new interior and lots of other bits and pieces including badges.

Attached are a couple of shots taken in Kendal services on the way up the M6 and in its new home next to its big brother.

I've still to sort out a programme of works, and decide what first ie mechanical, bodywork or interior, but its MOT'd and taxed til March.

As usual, now I've got it home, I'm finding lots of things needing work and replacement.

What do you think ? all comments welcome

I'll start a project blog shortly

Cheers

David

New car

Looks pretty good !!

I'm sure you will find lots of bits needing done but it looks like a great base, I take it you are keeping it standard and just tidying it up ?

Looking forward to the rebuild pics and seeing it in the flesh, probably next year now  :(

Looks really nice mate. Hope there are no nasty surprises for you to unearth when you get to work on it. Good luck with the project.

Hi,

Yes mainly standard I think, but want to improve various aspects, like braided brake hoses, GTi front lower spoiler, adjustable coilovers, respray, new interior (haven't a clue what, but not same as), EBC brake discs and pads, new exhaust, before old one falls off, and some decent period alloys to name but a few things I'll be doing as funding permits.

The main thing is to stop the rot and steadily improve

Cheers

Hi Smudger,

Have taken first set of record photos to enable the strip to commence, so far no good news, lower rear valance, and both rear arch sections require replacement.

A thorough high power wash to remove residue and algie has revealed poor paintwork cover, which will probably necessitate full respray.

That said though if I make the May trip you can buy me a pint, then it's not free  :)

Barry,

Thanks for the kind offer, I'll bear it in mind.

Not sure whether to replace with Stainless steel copy or mild steel.  :?

Hopefully the standard exhaust will last for a wee while to let me get on with the bodywork

I'm still unearthing things which were not on my original budget !!!!!!  :(

Have started stripping car, so will start a project blog and take some update photos if it stops raining at the weekend

Thanks again mate

Partial strip

Well, I'm pleasantly surprised, having stripped all plastic arches, trim, bumpers and grille, I've now been able to assess what needs replaced or welded, and its not too bad, given the moisture retaining characteristics of the driver's plastic arches.

Here are some update pictures, I'm now becoming an Ebay bitch and on Tuesday I'm off to the scrappies and a bodyshop. I'll post up the outcome of both.

Any comments as always are very welcome

Cheers

October spend

I am definitely for the high jump when my better half finds out how much I've spent on the various vw forum sites ie ebay heritage etc.  :(

Thing is though, with the exception of a GTi lower spoiler, all the bits and bobs fit in one jiffy bag !!!!

When I look at it all, I can't see where the money has gone, am I alone in this predicament ?

Got to stop buying things so I can save for my respray.

Car goes into local garage tomorrow for various mechanical repairs, so time to get on with re-furbishing the existing arches with my heat gun.  :)

More photos to follow, if I survive breaking the news to my beloved !!!!!!!!  :(

Janise has found out in my case. Trying to make a reasoned argument in my defence the other day. Some what difficult as Jansie had to tow me back home the other day electrical problem now fixed at no cost to the budget. Got to the bottom of my oil leak need to fit a distributer shaft seal only a few pounds for this part hopefully !!

Question - Where do you start when attempting to get a car back into some form of respectability?

I have decided on mechanicals this winter before addressing the bodywork next winter then fixture and fittings is this the correct order. Or should you start with bodywork first before mechanicals any one got some ideas on this?

Up in the attic at the weekend found old photos of my Mk1 Golf 1977 GLS   OES 570 R  taken at the 1982 Swiss GP.

Hi Graham,

I thought I was going to work on the bodywork first, as there are some bad areas of rot under the arches.  :(

However, all the bargains I've been digging up on the web, seem to be either mechanical or interior, and now the exhaust has packed in and the clutch is about to go, so my plans are all over the place.  :(

I want to do it right though, and I'm not working to a timescale, so no rush.  :)

My work sequence if I can stick to it is the following :-

1. Bodywork
2. Mechanical
3. Interior
4. Wheels

The budget is tight, but I'll just take my time and have fun.

Cheers

I did mechanical first so I could move it about, drive to garages/workshops etc. Body work will be next but thats not going to be cheap ! Great colour btw. You are so right just have to try and enjoy it ! good luck.
