Mk1 Campaign rebuild

Hello everyone never been one to show what ive been working on before but posting on here might just help me keep going at it!

The cars an `83 mars red tin top, car was put into a lockup years ago stripped new front panel, new back panel etc, then the council decided they were going to knock it down.

The car was then moved to a barn started stripping the engine down and discovered the barn was full of leaks, time also became a factor!

Fast forward a few more years and ive eventually got it moved into a cracking garage with space plenty of light and where i can paint (spray painter to trade).

The dampness has taken a bit of a toll on it but nothing that cant be sorted so ill let the pictures tell the rest of the story







The new front panel (Genuine ) total waste! has taken a beating so thats first off so been a productive first day


Nearly had the engine removed as well until i hit a snag with the drivers engine mount, the large bolt is just turning can it be removed at the block? i seen a post somewhere about this but cant get back to it?

First of all welcome to the Club!

Looks like you've got a bit of work to do there but clearly you know what you're doing.  :thumbs:

As for your question, well I can't answer it I'm afraid but I'm sure one of our members will see this and let you know how to do it, if it's possible!

Welcome Dave! Thanks for posting up your thread and paying for membership  :thumbs:

I can't help with the bolt question - I've done many things on MK1s but still haven't removed an engine! lol

As Mike says, someone will be along with the answer soon enough ;)

Thanks guys yes there is a lot of work but my old mans a panel beater as well so very handy! Been floating in and out this site for long enough so decided was time to pay up, got all the panels so that's a bonus and I stripped a golf years ago my only regret was not keeping more of the stuff I stripped from it but hopefully grab what I need off here

Ok so a very productive first weekend ! front panel off and the engine out, airsaw onto the engine mount bolt sorted that problem

Welcome to the club Dave. Good amount of work for your first weekend :thumbs:  Will that rear panel push back in easy enough? looks salvageable to me :)

Thanks guys, I did think about saving it but I've got another genuine one and I want to make sure there's no rust in the back of the seams, plus going to paint the back of the other one before fitting so it's all protected. The back panel and towing eye was damaged with a dodgey transporter not ideal but least it's in a better garage now

Ok so i know a lot of people dont agree with taking off factory sealer, so after weighing up pros and cons i got into the wheel arches with a wire wheel,



This is the type of thing that was hiding especially in some of the seams so defo worth while






Sealer and stonechip from both arches!!

I think you're doing the right thing - as good as factory sealer is, as you've seen it can be hiding a multitude of sins!!

It's just a shame that it's such a pain to get off! lol

Got a bit side tracked the last few weeks on my pals stock car, bit of  pain as its time i could have spent on the Mk1, a bit off topic but if anyones thinking of painting a mk1 the new clio red it looks stunning in the sunlight





 


Anyway back to the Mk1 tried the front panel up and found a bit of a flaw! Rust! under the factory primer, so probably end up having to buy another one!!!

May 2015 where has time gone 2 kids later! , car is on its 4th move but now in my own garage so we're back at the start again but more prepared this time! so had to start buffing all the makeshift primer back off

 Time to start getting some of this shiny metal into primer!  Only get to spend limited time on the car so abit at a time, sticking some  bilt hamber electrox on just now till the rest of the bay is coated then it'll be a full couple of coats of high built which should give it plenty of protection

Good progress so far, will be keeping an eye on this one. I agree with removing the factory underseal as its quite likely there will be rust hiding underneath it. Although the factory underseal would also provide a degree of sound deadening and I'm not sure if these cars are the same once its all been removed. If I ever did another restore and felt the car was in good enough shape i think I would try and leave it in place. Just my thoughts on it

Totally agree, if it looked ok id have left it in place but the engine bay always bothered me and its an area youll only get one chance at once the engine is back in so i want to make sure its as good as i can get it

Highly recommend this product its a bit messy and takes patience but the end result is impressive

A wee half day on it and the other side now has some zinc onto it, just the bulkhead now to tidy up and the bay can get a few coats of high build

Mk1 Campaign rebuild

Very impressive work! Well done indeed!! I’m currently finishing off my Caddy mk1 Porsche Cayenne engined project in Manilla green.  But then i’ll be starting on my Diamond silver Campaign project so will be watching your progress with great enthusiasm! Keep up the good work!!!
