golf1980's 1980 golf driver G60
This is not really a build thread but just some pics from over the years.
This is my first car.
According to the VW birth certificate, my golf was made on the 12th of July and left the factory on the 15th as a VW golf 'S'.
I believe this means it is one of the last S1's made as they changed to S2 in August 1980.
It left the factory with 13jx5.5 steel wheels and tweed upholstery.
It was first registered in the uk in october 1980 as a VW golf driver, 1272cc, 4 speed manual, 3 door, 14x6 RG 'TYPE CLAY' alloy wheels(i still have these).
I am the 9th registered owner.
I bought when i was 17 for £800. i really love it.
It was a gti look a like with all the trim.
I put chrome bits on it straight away(i still have all the original trim just incase i decide to change it all back)
i have so many pics because i take some each time i change something.
this is one of the earliest digital pics i have;
The previous owner put the mk4 polo 16v wheels on it.
So i bought these wheels to replace them;
they scrubbed so i got these ones;
then i got my arches done so the porche ones got a re furb and went back on for a while;
these are the show room upgrade alloys;
my current wheels. 15x7 et13 pcd 4x100 BBS mahles. 2 sets of rears from a bmw E21. 8) ;
old and new;
so those are all my wheels.
when i got it re sprayed( january 2010) it had no bumpers for a while;
a few weeks after the re spray, the windscreen imploded whislt my girlfriend and i drove along the a43 at 70mph!
it was scary. lucky we were both wearing sunglasses! we were both all cut up. Liz still has scars on her legs
it has a nice laminated windscreen now.
i use it as much as possible. no matter what the weather;
(that is me in that pic)
before and after a good t cut and wash(pre re spray);
representing mk1s at the first vw meet at the stratton arms in turweston;
some bits i made at work;
being prepped for a re spray;
archwork for the bbs';
mk1jim very kindly gave me this;
new rear lights;
current interior;
it is currently getting a new g60 engine put in so whilst the old engine was out, i got the bay sorted(these are my most recent pics to date);
^the last pic of it as a 1.3. it is looking at its new engine.
i will put more recent pics up when i get the car back.
now here is a bunch of pics that i think just look really cool. they are in no particular order;
My car shares carbon with this car;
mark webbers race car
that is about it for now.
more to come.
it is nearly finished.
Thanks for looking
Rich

ha ha. thanks very much. as you can probably tell, i am very happy with it. i havent always been though. mainly when i was really poor and it kept breaking down.
i love the beemer wheels too. selmdon seen on a mk1 golf 8) or a bmw for that matter! very rare. if anyone has a set, keep hold of them.
they are very light too!

the rear panel is original. i get that question alot. you are right though. i have seen some 1980's with large rear lights too. it was the last year of the series 1. maybe some of the last 1980's to be made were s2?

thanks mate. no problem. i am really pleased so far. i've imagined fixing it up for years. i used to cut pictures of nice wheels out of my old magasines and put them on a photo i had, just to give me an idea of what it will look like one day! lol. i could not imagined what i have now though! you well know about all the little details that go into making it your own car. all the things that go wrong teaches you something about it.
as for the noise! i can't wait! the custom exhaust sounded amazing when it was a 1.3! now it is a supercharged 1.9!
i think i am looking forward to the noise more than anything! i have even taken out my soundsystem because i dont need it anymore! lol.

so pleased it finally arrived!
one thing i have learned whilst owning this golf is patience. its always worth waiting for.
i haven't got any pics of the porting work sadly. didn't think of that. i should have asked them to take some whilst they did it.
i do have loads of other pics that i do need to put up on here. some new engine pics and latest project i've been working on at work 8) wait till you see that!
got new G60 steels on for winter now and i have a new 11 slat debadged chrome grill to go on aswell. going to lower it a bit more too because the wheels tuck nicely now that the arches are done.
probably about 20 hours work left and it will be finished!

thanks!
with the bbs' i used 5mm spacers on the rear to try and bring them out a little. i think the fronts poke out a little too much.
with the g60 steels i have 5mm spacers on the front and 10mm ones on the rears. these have a higher offset than the bbs so the tuck looks quite nice i think. especially now that the arches are done. means i can lower it a bit more
that hut is awesome! had alot of fun building it.
it's given me something to do whilst the car is away.

and a couple of unfinished bay pics for you guys
that is one very very special cam cover. made from pre preg F1 grade carbon fibre. not wrapped. 100% carbon. red bull use this carbon on their twice F1 championship winning cars. i am very pleased with how it has turned out.
