1983 GTi

Picked this project up the other week its a 1983 1.8 Mk1 Gti
IMG_8629.JPG IMG_8587.JPG

The shell came pretty bare
No engine
No Interior
No rear suspension

The rear axel was out of the car due to the mounting points being rotten so i have ordered two repair sections so i have something to work with.
While the rear axel is put i decided to strip it and send the axel, backing plates and brackets off for shot blast
I have decided not to powder coat and am I'm going to treat the bits myself with my own etch and will be painting it with rust-oleum  anti rust metal paint, friend of mine painted his axel with this 4 years ago and is still mint now!

As the axel will be freshly painted I'm going to order new bearings, shoes, fitting kit, brake lines, bushes and so on….

currently waiting on my axel back from shot bast so put the car up on the ramp to have a look underneath, didn't look too good look like previous owner had tried to have a go him self and gave up!!   IMG_8626.JPG

started cutting bit of the last persons patch out and it started raining so will update with new photos in the week :D

Yeah it's savable! Yeah I've gone over it, jacking points are abit crushed on both sides so I'll probably put two sills on it, a couple of inches both sides floor pan needs doing, the heel board and rear axel mountings, couple of little holes in the wheel arch, arches ain't too bad! And inside the car a little patch needs doing on the rear tub, it sounds a lot I know but when you see it there little bits that need tidying up, all round the windscreen and front panel and engine bay are clean! It's had a respray before not to the best of standards so I will be bare metal respraying it myself! Thanks will do :)

They can rot for fun so that's no surprise. Will be a great sense of achievement to bring it back to good health. Have you done much repair work like this before?

I've seen a few cars in worse state than this get repaired so it should be all good! Yes hopefully! I will most likely keep this for as long as I can as I've always wanted a mk1! No I haven't I'm only 20, I'm in the body work trade but I'm a painter not a panel beater but I started when I was about 16 so I know some bits like filler work, panel beating  and stuff just not so good on fabrication but I have something to practice on here I'm sure!
