Hello Dolly

1989 GTi Cabriolet Sapphire Blue

So, after months and months of searching for either a cabrio or a Mk2 tin top, I finally managed to snap up this little cabrio. Enter Dolores (Dolly) Very pleased so far - despite having to call out the AA on the 60-odd mile trip home from Poole on Sunday - some f*cktard electrics which let the fuse for the fuel pump dangle and fall out after 40-odd miles! The AA dude fixed her in about 10 minutes flat. He gave her a glowing reference too (aside from those electrics!)

When I got her

That aside, she runs really smoothly and pulls very strong. All the gears are nice and slick and free from notchiness. She only has 89k on the clock and this is backed up by some service history and all MOTs since '92.  I have always wanted one of these, so it's just great to have her tucked away in the garage for the moment.

Enforced comfort-break, on the way home!

I've a few things to tackle, but nothing major. There's a small amount of rust on the tailgate and the bumper has lost a bit of paint - (if anyone can recommend a decent bodyshop in the South West, I'd be grateful!)

Tailgate small rust patch Scuffed bumper

The BBS RZs (for sale soon) are a little pokey for my liking (ET29) which rubbed slightly, so I've replaced them with a set of 15" Estorils, which I've always liked - I'll get these refurbished at some point (they're ok for the moment) and maybe get them accented with a slightly darker colour in the "holes"? - any pointers on doing that welcomed :)

& here she is with her big brother, Juan (the van) - those 15"s look the same size as the 18"s on the Cali!

Well, looks like you got yourself a great looking Cabrio there mate, well done!
Doesn't sound like she needs much doing either which is a big bonus.

I could be down your part of the World next July for my Daughters Wedding (Bournemouth).
So if you see this Guy floating around or you get to hear about it, you'll know it's that crazy Englishman who's just driven over from Vienna, Austria in this one.

It's the same weekend as the Clubs AGM 25,26,27 of July, so things could get interesting between Family and Club!

If you want a "How to' clean out those Smokey driving lamps.
Just PT and I'll send you a link to a post I made a while back about cleaning them (real easy) and mine looked far, far worse then yours!

Enjoy the car and the Club!  :)

Cheers for that. I'll look out for you then. You're driving the cabby from Austria? 😃

I'd be grateful if you'd ping me that link too!

Yep, Vienna, Austria to Winchester, Hampshire.
Down to Bournemouth for the Wedding and up to Uttoexter (maybe) for the Sunday of the AGM.
Back down to Winchester and finally back 'over the hills and far away' to Vienna again (good game, good game).
Look out for a post I will have up about the trip!

Anyhow enough about me, here's the post about the lamps.
There's a number of great suggestions for cleaning them and if you want to use the one I did, you'll find it near the bottom.

Great cabby you've found there Andy, one of the best colours for late cabbys I reckon. My last 944 was Sapphire Blue - I loved it - and love this too - Estorils are a good choice too.

Enjoy it
