1983 tin top golf mk1 GTI restoration

Post

Hi all. So iv not been on this forum for a while but I have owned my mk1 gti for the last 10 years now. It was on the road for about 3 of those years when I got it and has been sat in my garage ever since. In between a hectic lifestyle I have slowly been stripping it down and restoring it over the years. This winter with having more spare time I have decided to hit it hard and get it done. so thought I might as well start a thread to follow the project over the coming year or so to complete. I will upload pics later and tell you what I have planned. It has the standard 1.8gti engine but has been bored out to a 2.0l and various other modifications carried out by TSR tuning some time ago.

thanks, hope you enjoy following this.

Adam

So this is what it used to look like when it was last on the road some 8 years ago, which I plan to get it looking like again and completely rust free

Thanks fausto. Yes it really did look fantastic but some poor repair jobs and a light blowover spray job from the previous owner meant it soon started bubbling and rusting in places and I couldn't just let it get worse.so this is how it currently looks sat in my garage. Most of the work to the bodywork is done, mainly the drivers side inner arch and fuel filler to do. I have replaced both outer rear arches already. 20170917_153532.jpg 20170917_153522.jpg

Been doing some more work on the car. New plate put in where the rear seat belt bolts to the body

Also been doing the inner arch on the drivers side and a new fuel filler piece to go in as this was shot with rust, typical area on a mk1 to go. Pretty much the last bits of the bodywork now apart from a new front slam panel going on which will be one of the last jobs.
