1983 1.8 Gti Mars Red Restoration

Post

The start or maybe the end ? ? ?

The car is a 1983 1.8 GTi in mars red.
It has been owned by my father for the last 24 years, unfortunately it has sat on the driveway on axle stands for the last 22 years. Now it is going to be subjected to a full restoration. Sometime in its early life it has a folding vinyl sunroof fitted. Not usre if this was by the dealership or an aftermarket fitment. I know it was not factory, after reading up on them over the years it has been well established that factory vinyl sunroofs do not exist.
Earlly on in its life the car was stolen and its seats and dashboard were stolen. The previous owner to my father purchased it direct from a breakers yard who fitted a set of seats and a dashboard. Because of this, the original mileage is unknown.
I have attached some images of the car, Is it too far gone to restore ?
Does anyone recognise the car or the vinyl roof and know what company may of fitted the roof ? It will need replacing, but has no id marks or company name on it.
I am located in Birmingham and would appreciate any reccomended companies that could do the bodywork.
Sorry for a long first post.
regards
Noel

(I am trying to add images to the post, but it tells me the post is too long, can anyone help with uploading images  ?)

I think a company called webasto ??  used to do similar sliding sunroofs, ruined many a good car in my opinion..

Have to agree with comment above about the Webasto roof, must have been all the rage back in the day.

However, car definitely doesn't look too far gone from those pics. Obviously it's going to need a fair bit of work, but nothing that can't be salvaged. Have a good look underneath at the rear axle mounts.

Good luck, it'll be worth it.
