Yet another Newb

Hello All,

Here's the latest addition to my family.
A gorgeous MK1 series 2 GTi :-)
Picked him up last weekend.

 8)
Needs a bit of body work looking after but it's pretty clean otherwise.
Been doing a little tinkering over the last week;
- fixed the drivers side door lock
- fixed the sump plug leak - just a little weeping
- re-fitted the carpets
- removed and repaired the stereo, just need to get it back in.
- thoroughly cleaned the interior
- fitted a new battery
- Still got to find a coolant leak - it's a mystery! I can't see where it's coming from but it's dripping off the gear box next to the CV boot. It's not the head gasket is the oil is clean. It must be coming from somewhere and running down :dontknow:

Spent most of Sunday washing the fleet. Before spending a few hours with the t-cut colour restorer. The paint works come up lovely

Got him booked in for an MOT Friday - so crossing everything - got a little rot that may worry the nice people at the MOT station….

Plan on just tinkering for a few months before starting on the bodywork, idea is to have some fun and enjoy the early summer before he's off the road for a few weeks - but that really depends on the result of the MOT.

Cheers

Hi and welcome!
Nice car you have there. All the best for the MOT. When I kept losing coolant it was the expension tank itself leaking. 20 odd years of chaffing against the mount area had worn part of it away (you could barely tell by looking at it), so fitted a better 2nd hand one in two minutes and hey presto! Worth a check

Make sure all your coolant connections and clips are tight… the run the engine (pressure) and watch the site for the dripping… may be a hole/split in a pipe..

Anyway I'm really glad you've joined that's a cracking motor mate  :y:

Hope the MOT goes well and update us with the result

Best of luck for now mate

I'll have another look over the expansion tank and all the hoses again tonight - I've brought it into work for a run so it'll be nice and pressurised when I get home - wifeys out tonight to I can tinker  :P

MOT

Hello All,

Well the MOT didn't go to well  :(
Failed on 2 lots of rot and emissions.

There's a hole in the spare wheel well - which I knew about, but because it's near (within 30cm) of the towing bar anchor point it's a fail. It's more of a frustration really, as I'm going to get the hole patched up when I start on the restoration and I'm going to remove the tow bar anyway - meaning it wouldn't have been an anchor point. You have to laugh  :banghead:
The other spot of rot is close to the passenger seat belt anchor point - on the sill, so same problem. If I'd have MOT'd it 3 weeks ago it would have passed - it's a new ruling - doesn't make it any safer tho.

Nothing major though thankfully, just a couple of plates to weld in. The garage is going to do that tomorrow and hopfully tweek the emissions in so still hoping to make the Milton Keynes meet tomorrow night  :P

Cheers
