Post

Hi, just a quick question from a total newbee!
Was there a mk1 gti model made without a sunroof? Just seen one I'm looking at buying, but unsure of its authenticity! The rest of the car seems sound!

Any info will be much welcomed!! Cheers!

Welcome to the Golf Mk1 mad house and in short yes the original Gti came without a steel sunroof.

The last ones were called the Campaign Model and they did have steel ones.

But we have hundreds of experts on this subject, so I will leave it to them to go into this deeper!

Cheers mate, it's an 83 plate standard gti not a campaign model! I'm just not coming across many without a sunroof that's all!  O_o

Quite an expensive option at the time I think, reason why quite a few put glass aftermarket roofs in, but now many people don't like them preferring a standard non sunroof or factory fit sliding, having said that lots of rust issues with the factory roofs if not looked after, so making a non sunroof model quite desirable.

Post up some pics if you want some opinions of the car, we tend to have quite a critical eye though, but might help you know what doesn't look quite right and may need fixing.

Welcome to the forum.

Non sunroof models = no leaks and associated rust issues, I'd prefer it over a sunroof model if I'm honest.

Mine doesn't have a sunroof  :)(or twin head lights or tinted glass…..)

Back in the day I ran a @6yr old '83 Mk1 Driver with a factory sun roof, the drain holes where already going rusty. Lord knows what they'll be like after 30+ years.

Thanks a lot for your all of your replys! Certanly settled any doubts I had! The only other thing (very minor) it's a black gti that's been partially restored, after the paint job the decals haven't been put back on, are they easy to come by? I've found a lot of the bottom ones but not the waist highs below the trim!

Jim, do you have or can you get some pictures of this Mk1?

Give up some meat on the bone with as much detail as you have.

I mean we are fairly good at giving people like yourself sound advice but we need something to work with and at the end of the day, it's in your interest!

Wow Jim, now we get the picture!
I like it, even if it is black   well I've got this thing about white.
Anyhow, I'm not the expert on the GTI so I'm going to leave it to all those at this Club who are!

But I love it.

Looks nice, don't think the Silver side stripes are the correct ones, but that's the least of your worries.

Not a stunning bargain but looks a decent example that's not been slammed, 20v turbo'd, painted purple metalflake with 19 inch rims.

That looks pretty good from the pictures, I guess it depends what it's like underneath and the quality of the work it's had done on the body before as to worth the price, seems to have some good history which is nice.  Only bits from photos as mentioned are the lower side stripes, they are too close together and the wider one looks a bit too wide.  Also missing a silver stripe under the black waistline trim, and no doubt a silver stripe along the base of the tailgate as you say,  I think some one posted a link to stripes on a post a while back, but if not should be able to source some pin striping off ebay to fit. I can get you measurements off my factory original when you need them.simple fixes though, as is a new black badge for grill.

Also think Y reg cars should have the black wind deflector trim around the windscreen pillars, but these are more trouble than they are worth and can rub away paint at the base.

Don't worry about not having a Matt black surround around the rear window -black and Helios blue cars don't have it.

Also looks like they may have had it in stock since at least last September as tax ran out then and it's not SORNd.  Also photos were taken in summer as flowers in gardens in background, nothing to be concerned about but might give you some more bargaining power.

That looks pretty good to me. As has been said before, it largely depends on how sound it is underneath and how good the restoration work is but it looks standard and unmolested and has working LCD in the clocks and no holes in the seat bolsters etc.  Looks like it's been cared for.

New side stripes can be had from vwstickers.com and you'd be hard pushed to tell them from the originals. Just remember to warm the old ones gently with a heat gun when removing so they don't take the paint with them.
