i have just got the car of my dreams which is a 88 mk1 gti, conv, a car I could never afford as a kid but vowed I would have one.
the previous owner has said that the exhaust manifold has been welded and therefore could do with a change. I have sourced someone who has them but they have asked if it is a doughnut or square. I am lost. Any help on how to know which one or example pics would be really appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Where the exhaust manifold comes down the back of the engine, it connects to the down pipe, either by a rectangular flange or a round flange with two, nasty big C-clips clamping it together.
Looks like you have the latter - http://www.oemepc.com/vw/part_single/catalog/vw/markt/RDW/modell/GOC/year/1988/drive_standart/44/hg_ug/253/subcategory/72000/part_id/3688051/lang/e
Get some pics up of your new ride!
Where in the UK are you?

It goes from 4 to 2 to 1 pipes which looks a right pain to get to.
Also I am in North Wales and keen to gain as much knowledge as I can.
Once I work out how to, I will throw some pics up.
Thanks again

Hello from a newbie
The C clamps are a right pain to remove. Do a search on here about them. There was a great tip to remove them without losing limbs, but I can't remember what it was! Lol
Keep your eye out for the North West region meets. They're regular and well attended. Dano can fill you in on those
