Hello - Looking for advice

Post

Firstly.. Hello everyone, been looking around the forums for a couple of days now and seems pretty cool here.

I don't currently own any type of VW but have always liked the make and forever had a sweet-spot for classic cars and obviously the MK1 combines both of these.
I have wanted an mk1 ever since seeing one, and always thought a project car would be fun.

I was wondering what sort of price I would be looking at for an alright condition mk1 that I could clean up, give a new coat myself, and fix up the interior alongside other small jobs. What should I look out for when buying one?
Also wondering what insurance and tax is like for not heavily but slightly modified mk1s is like, I am 18 and have 1 years no claims on my own policy.

Thanks!

Welcome Wry - it is very cool here!

Given your age I guess you'll have to aim at a 1.1-1.3 engine for insurance.

Rust is one thing to keep an eye out for and just general condition and trim in good order.

Price would really depend big time on condition - if with or without MOT, work needed etc. Best to just keep your eyes peeled on ebay, piston heads and the like to get a feel for prices - and what sensible money is.

When you're ready to buy see if there's anyone here local to you here who can come and have a look with you.

Good luck with your search and keep us posted ;)

Regarding (minor) rust, is that something that can generally be sorted easily yourself?

No problem if you have a MIG welder ;)

Just surface rust and you can get away with some treatment, filler and paint, but typically what you can see is only the tip of the iceberg.

The best advice is to plough all your money in to buying the best one you possibly can afford body wise as the mechanicals are easy and generally pretty cheap to fix
