Unleaded help please

I have just bought a 1600GTI Y plate cabby.

The seller supplied me with a bottle of engine additive!

Does this engine need leaded fuel?
Is it a good idea to use additive?
If this does need leaded fuel is there a conversion that will allow the use of unleaded without additive.

Thanks

Leaded/unleaded fuel

The additive supplied by the previous owner is REDEX lead replacement. Any ideas why he was using this?
Thanks

You don't need it, all MK1's will run unleaded, just the timing needs to be altered if not already done. Do a search on previous posts as you should find this

was going to say that, the additive will have been used because form day one in the uk it would have run on 4 star.

when 4 star was deleted (all veedubs from late 60's will run on unleaded) soem peopel used additives, others just changed the timing

Hiya, Welcome  :D

I used to put Redex in my blue GTI when leaded first disappeared, but I was assured I didn't need it so stopped. Never had any problems.

I've never put any additive in the white one. I do find it runs best on BP Ultimate though. Bit like a bag of spanners on Tescos and the like!
