Totally new!!!!

hello people, im totally new to all this stuff. i really really want a MK1. ive just turned 20 now, and atm own a VW T4, but want a car now, as the van is just too big (its a hi top and looks herendous )
my dad has a Golf MK2 GTI, witch is totally original, and a MK1 GTI, witch is straight but needing so much work he reckons? ive grown up around VW`s, and adore them, but especially love the MK1 Golf, its awsome. my dad is helping me out abit but has little know on the MK1. so i joined this forum to see if any1 can help me out?
im just trying to get a feel for what i need to look out for, and whats good, not so good etc???
i have around 2500 to spend, plus some money when i sell the T4. if any1 could give me some advice or any ideas it will be much appreciated.
