Thanks for the opportunity to Join the MK1 club

Greetings from the United States. I have owned this 78 Golf since 1991 and have been  slowly turning it into what you all have been able to buy in Europe since its inception. We did not get the GTI till 1983 and that was a US built version and did not please me as the 78 Golf did so I opted to build a Euro version from a Rabbit L.I am getting it prepped for a complete Body respray this week I have set up a viewing site for all that are interested in seeing the progress.photos are at dot photo service link is

Thanks for the kind welcome

I have allready found a wealth of ideas for my makeover from the photos posted by your members. It is hard to find what the GTI is supposed to have on it compared what they equipt them with here in the US.
Thanks Again,337socal

Welcome to the forum!

At least you have a German built car so a better basis than a US one. Is it easy to get Euro GTi parts over there?

I have a Rabbit and parts over here are a nightmare!

Cheers

you guys are so dedicated

You are correct the german built  car is much better made and seems to stand the test of time much better than the US version.Getting European parts is a bit difficult. I seem to find most of them on modified cars in wrecking yards.I got the euro bumpers, techtonics exhaust, hella 4 lamp grill,Zender rear wing that way.I was able to build a 1.8 and 5 speed with a quaife differential 3.55 final drive from a german made engine and trans from an 83 us car.We of course have the tuners here in the US that import alot of parts but most carry only A4 A5 Audi stuff nowadays.
