Quick help from golf MK1 pros?

Hi all!

Well im 19 and looking to buy a mark 1 carb 1.6 online

Its gold colour convertible and really like it however the mileage is sitting at 197 000! they are asking £1000 for it, they said the roof was replaced in 2006 and has recently recieved a full service, the guy has only had it a year.

Any tip before I drive 8 hours to buy it?

Is it worth driving 8 hours home with it?

ALL INFORMATION IS APPRECIATED. i honestly dont know much.

Thank

Solomon

also left a reply in the mk1 golf section.

looking at the photos this does look a reasonably straight tidy car.

Beware pictures can be very decieving and i may well be wrong but under the rear bumper behind drivers side rear wheel on picture 2, it does look like rust which for me would be a big put off.

Hmmmm… 8 hours to find out it's your dream car or 8 hours to find out it's full of rot… I'd phone the guy and tell him your situation and ask him to be completely honest as you wont be happy travelling 8 hours to find out he's forgot to mention things.  I'd wonder why the guy has only had it a year too… does it have fuel issues (stopping and starting due to crap in the fuel lines - rusty filler neck)?  If you decided to see it, take it for a test drive on both street and dual carriageway… if it feels straight, docs check out, your buyers guide checks look ok, do a quick HPI check and then make an offer  :dontknow: ….. but I'd push him to be brutally honest before even considering that amount of travel bud.

Used cars for sale - PistonHeads UK

guessing thats the motor,

not being rude but when i was 23 i could not find many insurance companys that would touch me on a convertrble till i was 25, and i really wonted a escort cabriolet in the end my m8 got intrested in one went out and brought one to find he had same problem i encouter,

1st of all i would get a few qoutes before getting your hopes crushed elsewhere, and not being able to drive it,

if that all checks out for you(fingers crossd for you) unless you have much knowledge of motors i would surgest take someone who knows about cars and perhaps of more age, being only 19 m8 some sellers will eat you alive, before you know it you brought a dog thats gonna cost you as much to re mot it as it did to buy it so becare full and welcome to the site m8 where advise is always around the cornor

Guys, thanks alot for your quick responses.

Yeah, well my dad is a mechanic (own business) for around 15 years. Which is a definite plus to this whole ordeal. Here is the link for it to check the car out out:

I spoke to the guy briefly and told him to send me alot of images, which I guess is a good idea (millfischk69). I also spoke o the guys wife and she said he is a mechanic and has had i for a year. I just hope he didn't get fed up with the car and know is just shifting it on.

Well Im traveling to sheffield with family and he said he would only travel the two hours to meet me there, unless I was going to buy it for sure. So im not really travelling all the way to him. But he would want it bought, I guess im gunna have to ask him to be dead honest with any problems, especially if he is a mechanic..

Oh and I got insured on it! :)

Any more recommendations after veiwing the car with the link given would be awesome!

Thanks in advance

Sol
