Potential New Owner

I am currently driving a Vauxhall VX220 and have done for the past year or so. I have always been interested in the MK1 GTI and I am seriously considering selling the VX to clear some debts and then buy a GTI with the leftovers (so to speak!).

Anyway, the questions I have could be probably answered in a 'Buyers Guide' so my first question is please can someone point me in the right direction if there is one?

I am after a fully restored one, and have a budget of up to ?3.5k which from what I've seen would get me a pretty decent one.
