Have you checked that your battery is fully charged? Turn lights on then with someone watching try and start car, if lights dim starter drawing current. Then we move to stage 2

OK could be a stuck starter, have you any tools?

sorry it may sound slightly dim but where is the starter motor is it at the back of the engine as that is where the clicking is coming from?!

No, if it's a 1.8 then the starter should be at the front ( not too sure on the auto version though). Follow the heavy red cable from the battery and see where it goes.

No think starter on autos is at back very close to exhaust which cooks it and kills it.

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

OK, need to check all connections are good, tight & clean. If this fails then looks like starter could be jammed. Best idea would be to take it out but you can sometimes get away with giving the case a good crack with a hammer or similar. This should hopefully either free it or move brushes to allow it to start, getting you home. It will probably need an overhaul or a replacement. In the auto there is also a 'kill' function to stop it being started in gear, only will start in P or N, sorry but I don't know where this is located. Let us know how you get on .. . good luck

thanks for all of your replies, given it a crack will a hammer no change someone has said my soleniods could be gone?

Hit the solenoid, not the starter itself. It appears that autos are more suceptible to starter motor failure, and with being unable to bump start them, I'd recommend replacement ASAP once it occurs!

I used to get this all the time with mine, i always found that either jump leads, need a little more power than the battery has, does it good, or somethimes i'd leave it half hour and then come out and it wpuld start no worries..
Weird

Try jump leads…
