Hi Ian and welcome! I'm no expert when it comes to cabby prices but there are some resident experts on them here! Doesn't sound too bad.

Make sure you check out 'Prowlers' cabriolet buyers guide as there's some cracking tips in there with photos plus check the tintop buyers guide too as some of this will apply.

Just follow the links under the 'Guides' section which is top right corner of the Home Page.

Keep us posted, feel free to keep asking questions and put some pics up when you've bought!!

Cheers
Andy

Hi! Bodywork and roof are most important I would say! It would be worth speaking to someone like Walt or Prowler to see if they can tell you what bits should be on the car (if you want it original). Drivers side bolster wear is usual but i'm afraid I am no Cab expert either so can't tell you about the other bits!

That sounds like a fair price, I find that cabs range from ?500 to ?3000+ and the price is not always a indicator of worth. I paid similiar for mine an looked at 4 in all. they ranged from Brilliant to rubbish but the prices didn't follow that scale.

In the end I paid for a car with excellent service history (only 2 years missing from 11 years ago!!!)  It also had the highest milage 157000!!!

But as shortstuff has said a good roof and body work are a must as they can be expensive to put right. Mechanicals are easy with a bit a pateince.

Look at the buying guide as it's a really good guide to spot the trouble areas

Good Luck

Sounds reasonable if the bodywork and roof are in good nick as mentioned.  Whilst 110k may sound a lot, my previous Golf was a '91 Mk2 and that was still going reliably at 150k. 8)

Yep, dont worry too much about the mileage. If its been well serviced then wont be an issue!

As said before use my guide

http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf

..and take it for a good long drive. Leave it for 1/2 hour and start it again - should fire straight away. Try to find out if and when the suspension, top mounts and other stuff was replaced.
You have either found a real bargain (someone does not know what they are selling) or there is something there that means they want rid of it, just sounds rather cheap to me for a good Rivage (but then I am ALWAYS suspicios and untrusting), even with bolster wear, pitted wheels (mileage means it's 'just run in' !!)
Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Hi,
I bought my gti cab a couple of months ago and only paid ?215 for it (actually my girlfriend bought it for me for my birthday - TOP BIRD!). The hood doesn't leak and there is only the odd rust patch over the wheel arches and back and front wing.
I suppose it all depends on what you intend on doing with the car? I'm fortunate to have another car that is my daily driver and am able to work on the MK1 whenever I choose so time is not really and issue for me, but I suppose if yours is going to be your regular driver then a better quality MK1 would be the option for you. At the end of the day you'll know if the car is worth it once you've driven it! I bought mine off ebay and only got to see it and drive it home once I'd won it - I have to say the MK1 gti is the best car I've ever driven and I've had all sorts from prestige to sports. The feeling you get from it is out of this world - since that day I have got the bug for the MK1's and can't wait to get it on the road. I currently have the MK4, but the MK1 is in a different league!
Let us know how it goes and if you buy it!
Good Luck
Jord
