Okay I'm a lil stupid!!

Hey there!! Proud owner of a 92 clipper in irl.  Wasn't sure of engine so you can imagine my dismay when the last recovery driver said "it's not like it's an injection or anything, it's only a carburetor."  Unill then i had thought/hoped it was a gti.  Recently broke the choke(amongst other things!) so after lookin on e-bay decided a carb kit included one and car could prob use it as it climbing miles like goodo, up to 143k!!

God bless rich he got a repair rather than a replacement kit on the way as I didn't fancy payin the p&p!!  But can any1 tell me good ways to improve the acceleration as I was mortified after I got a lil creamed by a 07 gti the other day!!

Plus I can never let it go down past a half tank of petrol as it shakes, shudders, battery light flashes and some times cuts out, and very rarely won't start again, usually when I facing up hill.  Mechanic said he looked inside tank and could't see any dirt, unbelievebly clean for car thet age, fuel pick up clear,  have had 2 new fuel pumps to no avail!!  Other than she sweet as

Now ye might hate me for sayin this but I want a new car as Gretta(my clipper) is my daily driver at mo and I just need to give her a break to get her sorted out proper, and I hate seein the mileage clock spinnin round as I doin 500mls+ a week!!  Going to look at a mk3 vr6 tomorrow?  Any feelings on these? :dontknow:  :dontknow:

Hi and welcome!

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I would post up some threads about each query in the relevant sections if I were you (big block carb engines, fuel systems etc) that way you might get a better response from knowledgeable folk who might not visit the 'new folks' section.

500 miles a week is a lot for any car! It's a popular view that the Mk3 Golf VR6 is the only Mk3 worth having!    As long as you get a good one, the youngest Mk3's are now nearly 15 years old  8O.

As for getting creamed by a Mk5 GTI, I wouldn't worry about it, even if you were in a GTI instead of a carb you'd have trouble because the most recent GTI models (Mk5+) have well and truly caught up in terms of 0-60 times and power-to-weight ratios!

hi welcome to the club, as regards a vr6 and 500 miles a week i'd imagine it to be very expensive to run, if it was me i'd be looking at going dirty diesel.  i run a mk2 gtd and get 50+mpg and can easily keep up with a rivage gti, mk4 tdi are dropping in price now, and can be re-mapped  if you want a bit more poke

Mk1 2l TSR G60.  .getting. There twice as fast

Mk1 lhd diesel…….getting. There for half the cost

Hi there, it sounds fuel related, have you changed the fuel filter?
also sounds like it, as you mentioned it happens when its faced uphill.
Get the carb kit fitted, that may improve things, see where you go
from there, ps you only need a tiny amount of dirt in the tank to
make it start spluttering, so dont rule it out, check the filler neck
(where you put petrol in) and re check the tank after its settled
for a while, any sediment will be at the bottom of the tank then.
Mine did the same thing a couple of years ago, (mine was injection though), but the same symptoms.

Best of luck
