Not long now...

…until i'm able to drive that is ;)

At the beginning of March next year i'm able to start driving and i'd love a car. I've been looking at MK1's and i have taken a huge fancy to them.

I was at Newby Hall Car Show (some of you may be familiar?) yesterday and came across a Haynes Golf and Jetta Workshops Manual for ?4 so my dad offered to buy it for me. Thought i'd get to grips with the workings and sutff, found it quite interesting.

I start work tomorrow, my first proper job and will hopefully be generating a fair amount of money over the next few months, then i hope to buy a MK1!

I could either buy a good, running one or could opt for one that needed a bit of work doing to it. My dad has experience of restoring cars (Daimler SP250) so he would be able to help me with technical difficulties, etc. Any ideas/advice on this?

I'm also intrigued by the different trim levels and models. I know the various engine sizes but i'm puzzled when it comes to the trim level, GLS, GX, etc… which is the one to go for? most expensive/cheapest?

Finally, when it comes to insurance, how much should i be prepared to pay? Anyone else had a MK1 as their first car?

Any advice/answers will be hugely appreciated!

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob and welcome to the site mate.  I remember being in your shoes and it's a brilliant feeling.  Hope your test goes well next year.

I'd get a smaller block engine for insurance reasons.  They are getting harder to find but you can upgrade it as you go.  I'd keep the small engine to put back in later on if you're selling it as by then they'd be worth having   .

Any mk1 would need work in my view and it's part of the enjoyment/frustration of having one.  Read the guide on here, shop around and good luck  :D

Welcome aboard!!

Go for a driver, i love mine and i'm in the same position as you, can start learning in May.  Are you going to be keeping the car standard?  If so i would look for one in better condition.

Alex.

Like Alex I had a driver when I was 17.. quick for a 1.3 and plenty to be learning with mate.  Just try to get one with a good body as that is the most important thing on old cars bud.
