newbiee looking for project

hi all,
am new to golfs,have restored beetles and hotrods in the pastthough.i am interested in building a very fast 4wd mk1 golf.i would like a cab but believe it may be better to use a hardtop golf as i have a couple of small children that i want to be able to take to meets aswell.i would like a weekend car that dosent get shown up on the strip at santa pod.i am interested in any advice or possible cars/projects that would suit my hobbie,i hope to have a build thread on here shortly,great forum.
