newbie with mk1 gti **update**

ok not posted on this forum just been browsing

so after buying my mk3 golf 1.4 i wernt happy with it comparing it to my mk2 1.6 i used to own. so in my area i spotted a red mk1 golf went last sunday to ask what happing with it an the guy said he wants to sell it so went yesterday with my cuz whos a mechanic an he said make sure you get this car its worht it. so had a word with the guy an he wants ?400 for it so i said yep al ahve it.

only probs is

no MOT or tax
car smokes wen starts so need value stem seals doing
and thats it the interior is mint body work is sound will need a respray at somtime.

my plans are to get the car MOT'ed to see what needs doing then just start changing stuff to new like shocks, wishbones, ball joint, brakes then when getting the value seals done have the head rebuilt then after all that i will look at the outside. i will post pics when theres abit of day light

Very nice got yourself a bargain for ?400. The great thing is they're so easy to work with a haynes manual and a little help from people on here. Once you put the time and money in you'll have a beautiful motor. Whats the mileage on it? Just a note to anyone else my VDO gauges look different to that. Were there different styles?
If you want bits it can eb worth your while looking on here and also on E-bay for people who are breaking them. I'm quite lucky as there's a Volkswagen Breakers yard just up the road from me who has loads of bits. If anyones interested I can post the telephone number. Don't know if he'll mail bits out but it's worth asking. He's got loads of stuff for Beetles, campers, Golfs etc.
Good luck with your project Amzee

I'm in Warwick by Leamington Spa. If you go through Whitnash and out towards Harbury and Leamington Football club there is a go Karting place on the left handside. Drive around the back of there and you'll see it. The guy is really helpfull and has all bits. There is also a general scrapyard about 1/2 mile down on the left handside which is ok for bits usually have quite a few motors in.
Try and get yourself an older Haynes Manual off e-bay or something I have a really oly one and it's fantastic with loads of pics and stuff. The new ones don't seem to be as good.

Looks like a nice car for ?400.  You are right about the paint work though, looking a bit tired.

I bought my car because of its erfect body work and interior for ALOT more than that, and my engine broke just yesterday.  :?

My VDO gauges are different too.

hello and welcome, nice little project you have going there. I've never seen a vdo external temp gauge before? esp as the mfa has it already?
these could be ordered in sorts of combos from the dealer though and many look different as I think there were several series of designs?

any way look abit more an spotted this duno if it is lowering springs any idea

an here it is after i cleaned the boot

another thing is now the car dont start properly what happens is it starts then dies so i thought it was cause they was not enought petrol in so put ?5 worth in but still nuffin so got the jump leads an it started so left it on went to rev it an it cut of again an didnt start again but like comes on then goes straight off an ideas what can this be?????/

Interesting temperature gauge there. Is that an internal or external ambient one or something?

Cheers,

Drew.
