After many many yrs it's finally happened!

Hi from NE Scotland.

as per the title, a newbie to the forum and a newbie to owning a Mk1 so figured I'd throw a little into out there!

Name : Kenny
Live : NE Scotland
Current Cars : Daily B7 Missano Red RS4 Saloon, soon to be for sale B10 Alpina 3.3, Wifes's car Mk1 TT 225, 'pool/tip car peugeot 306 estate tdi, project in need of rebuilding Golf Rallye, and new purchase/project/summer car Silver Mk1 Gti

it all started in 1986 when my dad was working away, down @ Sellafield power station, and while down there bought a Silver Mk1 Gti, so as you can imagine me as a young pup loved this car and have wanted one ever since!

you can just my head poking behind it mid wash!

Over the year I've searched for one (not continuously, but every so often) and I've gone to look over a few which obviously never turned out to be that good, it had to be silver, not only to match 1986 but I also think they suit the colour superbly and as it became apparent, there isn't that many of them on the go!

Then recently a friend posted this on FB

and after a bit of digging and a few phone calls I located the car for sale on Ebay.
I had a good look over the ad and in my previous search found a previous owner on CGTi along with a detailed resto which was carried out in 08/09.
All seems good, it is started to tick more boxes than normal…
I then phone the seller and had a lengthy chat with him and a deal was done! and would you believe the car was only 10 miles up the road from where the photo above was taken!!!

so it would have been rude not to recreate the photo!

and after a very bumpy long ride home to Scotland it's now residing in my drive and I'm finally the proud owner of a Silver Mk1 Golf GTi;)

Hi Kenny and welcome to the forum.

What a fantastic story mate about your MK1 experiences and getting hold of a silver one. Can't believe how close it was to where you used to live.

Don't see many silver ones abuot these days so I hope you will bringing her to the AGM this year.

Best of luck with her.

Smudger.

P.S Whereabouts in North Eastern Scootland are you from :)

Yeah it’s taken a lot longer than expected to actually get one especially considering I’ve been involved in the VW scene for about 8yrs but I’ve been pre occupied with other VW’s over that time, mainly my Rallye which has unfortunately been off the road for over 3yrs. (hoping to get back working on it very soon)
Yeah it’s funny how it turned out being so close to where my dads place was, this was just rented accommodation while he worked in Sellafield and we travelled down a few times or he’d come home every other weekend. But sadly never took the Golf home with him when he came back to work in Aberdeen which answers your next Q.

When/where is the AGM?

I’ve got a few plans for it as the coilovers are needing changed out as they are solid!!!!! I was just bidding on a set of KW’s but the seller went and cancelled the bid! I’ve just taken delivery of a gear repair kit, I’m hoping that is going to make a big difference but I’m not too fussed as I’m probably going to be changing out the engine and box anyway. It’s got a 1900 16V in atm, but it hasn’t been put in that neatly which really bothers me.

There is a fair chance I’m going to end up doing the full work with this, as after being involved in the show season it put my already high standard through the roof! Hahaha

All in good time though (well maybe)

Ah good old Aberdeen. I learnt to drive in Elgin many moons ago. Lovely little town.

As for the AGM CLICK HERE mate and all shall be revealed.

Sounds like you're going end up doing a full resto on her mate :)

Got any pics of your Rallye, would be good to have a nosy. ;)

That Rallye looks amazing mate. What gearbox did it have in it? :)

It was the Rallye g/box but with VR 1st & 2nd and Mk4 diesel 5th.
The CAE shifter works with the normal H gate gear selector only the throw is massively reduced and solid, probably my favourite mod I had on the car with the Ferrari 599 seats a close 2nd:$

Thanks Andy, but that engine bay will never be again, but you may be glad to hear that it's now powering a very nice Mk1:wub:the Rallye's new heart is a little bigger and a lot more powerful :ninja:

Uhhhhh that Rallye

About the only car I'd sell my mk1 for :P Doesn't seem like Rallye owners ever want to part with them though…

no your right, I know a lot of Rallye owners and I know a lot of ex Rallye owners and EVERY ex owner regrets selling it massively!

Great story and nice to know you've found the exact colour you wanted.

Having your favourite colour Mk1 some how makes it feel that little bit more special.

P.s love the detail of the rally's bay (stock filter missing for me) but very tastefully done.

Wife, kids, car……not necessarily in that order.
