Newbie Need Help

Hi There!
I will start by saying that I am BRAND NEW to the world of VW. I've been driving an '05 Corsa for 3 years now and have just (today) purchased my very first 1.6, 1983 VW Golf GTI Cabrio.
I pick it up this Tuesday (on the back of a transport lorry  ) and am really looking forward to it.
I got the car for ?150 and am going to be chuckin loads of money at it, it looks like as im going to be doing it as a renovation project… HOPEFULLY in time for the summer.

Here are some pics of it, and yes….im fully aware it looks terrible but its recently had an engine change meaning the new engine has only done 9000 miles and it runs ok apparently. Though no MOT or Tax as of yet. lol.

Now the help part comes in here. Im looking for help with ideas on what to do with it. Im so so new to a VW and the last thing I want to do is chav it up and wreck it. lol.
Current basic plans are new exhaust, new roof, re-trim or new seats, some sort of semi basic audio, new wheels OR re-furb on current + spray them white. And maybe down the line a full re-spray.
So I need help and advice with all of that for a start.
Im a less is more kind of guy with cars so what is deemed as subtle, tasty and acceptable on these?
Pics would help.

Thanks for reading my noob essay and hi again!

alrite mate welcome!

i used to drive a corsa haha!

i like the colour tbf! cud do with a touch up or even jus a proper clean!. you could go a number of ways with styling im not a fan of clipper kits or anything like that jus personal preferance. id advise against having white wheels doesnt suit the mk1 stlye, again thats my opinion. id go with depending on budged colour matched bbs splits, HTN ks golds or maybe ronal turbos?

Hi Luke, welcome!  :D

Looks like you might have got yourself a bargain there for ?150 with a decent engine!

You'll be surprised what a decent clean and polish inside and out can do, and once you've done all the things you have planned it'll look superb.

For ideas you could have a look on this thread

Everyone's fave pics of their cars!

Hi,Welcome look forward to seeing the progress on this one,I am with the others a good wash and brush up would be a good starting point, replace the little bits of trim that have gone adrift, and take it from there :D  :D

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

Welcome Luke, that does seem like a real bargain you've got there  :) .  Are you keeping that colour? if so, my opinion would be to change the roof to Burgundy or Black. A nice set of leather seats always look good in the cabbys, get searching the site for ideas, and, as Debs said click the link she supplied for photos of other people rides….that should whet your whistle  :) .

Where you located Luke?

Afraid im not going to be able to make this one buddy. There is no way this cabby is going to be passing any kind of MOT for about a month. Just cant happen with the time and funds I have for it at the moment unfortunately  :(

Will hopefully be at the next one though!

You could bring yourself along to the show and meet everyone. It's nice to be able to put faces to names on here.

We have regular Essex meets in Chelmsford and at local shows, so I'm sure we'll see you soon.

(And you have to be careful of ew, he's always a bit funny around cabbys. It's a jealousy thing you see……….)

Another question for you clever golfers.

With looking at the pics of the car I posted in this thread in mind.

How much am I looking at to begin with. To sort out that rust (all spots are in the pics) and a new hood?

Also does anyone know any good places for a re-trim? Or even anywhere to buy interiors for the MK1?

Thanks again peeps.
