newbie. need advice on a mk1 gti 1.6

well at the minute i am driving a 2month old mk3 clio turbo. great looking and going wee car.

but a local car dealer is selling his pride and joy mk1 1982 1.6gti golf. its a light blue colour which i have never seen in the mk1. 15" deep dish alloys. i cant find a fault with this little car except the window wiper are rusty thats it.

i will try to get as much info up here as i can.
130,000 miles
still has the original pirelli alloys in the garage which come with the car. he says he has done alot of work to it. like set the suspension up so all 4wheels stay on the road corners. which i kind of dont like because i like the 3wheel thing because its kind of its party peice. he has pictures from 2005 when it was all rebuilt over 2 and a half years. the car went through mot 1st time without a hitch and has mot and tax to july

the man was looking ?2300 for it but the past few months he has sold no cars. needs the money and has dropped the price down to ?1800.

its certainly looks so nice. but i dont really know much about the mk1 or where to look out for problems. i was told to look at the boot hinges and they are perfect. it is fully wax oiled underneath.

the reason i love these car is because wen i was 8 (10years ago) my dad had  a white 1 as a 2nd car. think his was the 1.8 though.

is this a reasonable price for this car and any give away sign it could be a botched job or what to look out for

thanks, chris

GTIs were never available in light blue - that's a giveaway!

There's a price guide on the home page, which should help you guesstimate a value for the car you've seen. Its difficult to value a car without looking at it in the flesh, etc.

Hi welcome!  :D

As Paul says, without seeing it's difficult to judge.

If I were you I'd have a look at others for sale, say on ebay, and see what similar condition etc are going for.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you!  8)

Plus, if you're 18 you might want to check out insurance quotes before you commit yourself!

My son is 19 and has a 1.1 series 1 and his lowest quote so far has been in the region of ?1600  8O

the car was fully resprayed when it was rebuilt was originally red.

its the same colour as the 3rd golf in on the header at the top of the page. red white then the blue one.

well it would be a 2nd car as i have a 2month old clio turbo (134bhp) as my everyday car so i am fully comp which allows me to drive any car as long as it is not a 2seater or over 150bhp as long as i have the owners permission. the car would be getting registered in my dads name so i would be covered 3rd party.

car

from what you say it seems priced to sell in the current market, check the car for sale section on this site to see what other owners are asking for their cars and compare it to what you think of the one you are looking at.

also if its coming om a garage, what kind of warranty and history are you going to get with it?? if its been restored then there shoiuld be some receipts for new parts etc so you can see how much has been done to it.
before you commit, take it for a drive, get the feel, let it get hot and fan cut in, check timing belt replacement, and also if the fuel filler neck has been replaced and the spare wheel well has no rot etc. (a few things i can think off from the top of my head)

is it sold with tax??
try and get some pics up so we ca have a good debate in general chat or mk1 chat section.

here for a good time, not a long time

and as long as he has it insured too….

sounds ok, but defo worth a good look and a poke about..
and 1500 might be bargain..

wherabouts are you located/where si the car, might be a local member who could hel pyo give it a once over before with any cash!!!

but TBH, once you've got ina mk1 and driven it, you'll bethinking why i have got hisnew french car…

My cousin in law wanted to sell his 7 month megane williams and get a mk1after driving my old one..

worth checking the small print. A lot of insurers removed "Driving other cars" feature from their policy, or have age restrictions. Also you might fall foul of a clause saying its occasional/emergency only. Best not to cut corners on insurance, even though its tempting financially.

its ballymena northern ireland. would really appreciate someone with a brave bit of mk1 knowledge to look at it as i dont really have a clue about them.

well my dad would be insured on it ?175 for a full year and i would only be using it occasionally so should be fine. rang up my insurers and i can drive all cars except 2seater, convertables, vechicles over 50k

the clio was also a super fun wee car and was turbo so was probably faster than a standard mk1 or the same. wouldnt say there would be much in it. but its a big car and does everything i want it to. just want the mk1 for sometihng old school and the clio being more erm! private school i guess
