Newbie in North Wales

Afternoon all, I've been wanting a Mk1 GTI for some time now and after finally persuading the Mr's its time to start hunting.

After attedning at the VW show in Bodelwyddan on the weekend I've found a MK 1 for sale less than 10 miles away from where I live, the problem is I'm not too sure how much it's worth. The car is a 1982 X reg with an 1800 8valve engine that was put in by the owner. He still has the original 1600 engine and gear box that he will throw in with the sale of the vehicle. The current owner cliams he's not done a lot of miles on the 1800, its started well with no smoke on start up or idle.

The car was painted about 3 years ago in green and the body work is in good condition, it's had new sill's and the floorpans have been welded prior to paint. The car seems solid in the usual places that are prone to corrosion.

Its got various other mods to it, wheels, lowered etc. The interior looks tired but that can be sorted in due course. There was a bit of water ingress in to the boot area, it looked like is was coming in througn the rear light cluster. Easily rectified?

This is the cheeky bit, I've trawaled the internet trying to work out what I would consider to be a fair price for the vehicle, bearing in mind the non standard paint, engine and various other faults I'm getting nowhere fast!

How much do the people in the know on here think that the car is worth, I know it's hard to judge without pictures and physically looking at the car. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi dobbin welcome to the club, if the person selling the vehicle has no sale price in mind then offer him what you think the car is worth to you, he can only say no. When or if he does then that gives you a platform to start negotiating because no doubt he will come back with his price. Good luck.
