Welcome along dude !!! As said above you've come to the right place !!
The buying guide is a great read and there is lots to look out for when buying a gti and in my opinion the biggest dread is rust (after all the newest ones are coming up for 30 years old 8O ) and if you can get a tin top gti without a sunroof even better if it does have a sunroof then I personally would stay clear of the glass sunroofs as they can leak badly.
Keep an eye out in the local meet threads as in the new year will set up a monthly meet for Essex members, which will more than likely be at the 8 Ball CAfe on the A12 near Witham if you know the place.

Very nice, must sound great !!!
As you said, you want to buy the right one not the first one and thats a very good attitude to have dude. There are a lot of mk 1's about but hold out till you find the one in the best condition esp when bodywork/paint is conserned, unless you want a project.

Yea it turns heads and it's a great car but I'm in the motor trade and get to drive pretty much most things on the road and I think this is the reason I'm drawn to the mk1 it's unique and different unlike most modern cars which are pretty much the same Im up for a bit of a project that's half the fun isn't it plus I have some good workshop guys so that's always a bonus what sort of money do you think I should be looking at?
